POUGHKEEPSIE - The Marist football program has named six captains for the 2014 season: linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.), linebacker Mike Kagafas (Akron, Ohio), linebacker Hugh Kirwan (Montvale, N.J.), running back Atiq Lucas (Coram, N.Y.), wide receiver Armani Martin (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), and offensive lineman Jack Meussner (Wyckoff, N.J.).

This is the largest group of captains in school history, and all six captains are entering their fifth year in the program. Sakowski has been named a captain for the second consecutive season.

“It is a group who has accomplished a lot throughout their careers,” said Head Coach Jim Parady, who is entering his 23rd season at the helm. “Paul is a proven leader as a second-year captain. I think we’re well-represented in our leadership on both sides of the ball.”

Sakowski was named First Team All-Pioneer Football League last season and was second on the team in tackles. He was also named All-Pioneer Football League Honorable Mention in 2011 and 2012. Sakowski has started all 33 of the team’s games the last three seasons at middle linebacker.

Kagafas has played in 25 career games, and started all 11 games at outside linebacker in 2013. He finished the season with 56 tackles, with six-and-a-half tackles for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble. Kagafas has also been named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll twice.

Kirwan has played in 33 career games, with 11 starts at outside linebacker in 2013. Kirwan finished the season with 35 tackles, one sack and two-and-a-half tackles for loss. He has also been a valuable performer on special teams in his career.

Lucas was named All-Pioneer Football League Second Team in 2013. Lucas was tied for the team lead in touchdowns, with 12, including 11 rushing touchdowns. Lucas also averaged 4.8 yards per rush. He has been named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll twice.

Martin was named All-Pioneer Football League Honorable Mention last season. He set Marist’s single-season record with 12 touchdown receptions in 2013. He was second on the team in receiving yards last season with 770 yards on 45 receptions. Martin was also named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll last year.

Meussner has been named to the PFL Academic Honor four times in his career. He has been a valuable asset on the offensive line, serving as a backup at three different positions along the offensive line last season. Meussner comes into this season with seven career starts.

The Marist football team is in its second week of Spring Practice. The Red Foxes will hold their annual Spring Game on Sunday, April 27 at 4 p.m.
