POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team will host its home opener this Sunday against Manhattan in a doubleheader.
The Red Foxes are currently posting a 7-16 overall record and are 1-0 in the MAAC. Junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) leads Marist with 15 runs, while sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) boasts 21 hits, 16 RBI’s and four homeruns so far in the season. Defensively, senior Alyssa Zahka has 92 putouts, as Van Natta has claimed 49 assists.
On Saturday, Marist's doubleheader against Monmouth was postponed due to field conditions. The contests have not been re-scheduled at this time.
Last Time Out:
Last weekend the Red Foxes opened up conference play versus Fairfield. Marist dominated the first game and won 10-0. The second game of the doubleheader was called due to rain, and has been rescheduled for April 16 at 4 p.m.
Van Natta delivered a three-run homer in the second, and Kuzma belted a grand slam in the sixth.
Earlier in the week, the team traveled to Villanova for a non-conference doubleheader. The Red Foxes fell 5-2 in the first game, despite solo home runs from Van Natta and senior Haley Birnbaum (Lido Beach, N.Y.). In game two, Marist fell 5-0 as sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.), Van Natta, Kuzma, and freshman Rebecca Freeman (Robbinsville, N.J.) each notched a hit in the outing.
Manhattan: The Jaspers post an 8-15 record overall and a 1-0 record in the MAAC. The team is headed offensively by Elena Bowman who leads the team in batting average with .357 as well as home runs with seven. On the mound, Kate Bowen has a 5-4 record with an ERA of 3.50, the lowest on the team.
