POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team (7-2, 1-0 MAAC) is looking to extend its winning-streak to five game on Saturday, April 5 against Iona (1-8, 0-2 MAAC). The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public. Fans who cannot attend the game can watch live on the Red Fox Network.
Last Time Out: Marist defeated defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champion, Canisius, on Wednesday, April 2, 10-9. Sophomore Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) hit the game-winning goal with 21 seconds left in the game to earn Marist its first MAAC win of the season. With the win, the Red Foxes improved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC.
McHugh added one other goal in the contest. Marist was led by junior Emily Leonard (Brookfield, Conn.) with four goals. Senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.), junior Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.), sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) and junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) added one goal each. Freshman Natalie Bonaroti (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had the lone assist of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.Y.) had eight saves in the net for Marist.
Romano leads the Red Foxes with 24 points, including 23 goals. Gionta is right behind her with 22 points, including 16 goals and six assists.
Last Meeting: The Red Foxes posted a commanding 19-5 win over Iona in last season’s meeting. In a complete game in which the Marist Women’s Lacrosse team allowed six or less goals for the fourth time in 2013, a 6-0 start to the game would be more than enough for host Marist. Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) led six Red Foxes, who finished the game with three or more points, as the senior netted a team-high four goals.
Romano equaled Miller’s scoring output with three goals and an assist. Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) was the third player with a hat trick as she netted three goals.
Defensively, Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) made eight saves and allowed just four goals in 48:40 minutes of play. Christine Astarita (Kennett Square, Pa.) tied with team-highs of two caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Scouting the Gaels: Iona is currently 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the MAAC. Its lone win of the season came on Sunday, Mar. 23 with a 12-5 defeat of St. Bonaventure. In MAAC play, the Gaels fell to Canisius 19-12 and Fairfield 16-4. Three players lead Iona with 16 points apiece: Erin Pugh (14 goals, two assists), Mary Kate McCormick (10 goals, six assists), and Meghan Testoni (10 goals, six assists). Nina Veneziale is the only other Gael in double-figure points with 12 (11 goals, one assist).
Following this matchup, Marist concludes a two-game home stint on Wednesday, April 9 as it hosts Niagara. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Tenney Stadium.
