POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team (8-2, 2-0 MAAC) picked up its fifth consecutive win with a 17-6 victory over Iona. With the win, the Red Foxes improve to 2-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Marist was led by junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) with five goals and one assist.

Sophomore Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) had four goals for Marist followed by junior Emily Leonard (Brookfield, Conn.) with three. Sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) posted two goals and four assists. Juniors Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hills, N.Y.), Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.), and freshman Hayley Burke (Massapequa, N.Y.) added one goal each. Freshman goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) had three games and junior Liz Holmes (Longmeadow, Mass.) made six

Leonard netted the first goal of the game less than one minute in to give Marist an early 1-0 lead. Erin Pugh responded for Iona to tie it at one. DiMaria netted her lone goal of the game at the 26:07 mark off a pass from Gionta to give the Red Foxes a 2-1 lead. The Gaels responded once again with a goal at the 25:06 mark to tie the game at two. Gionta pushed Marist ahead again off an assist by Viscount. Iona tied it once again at three with 18:43 to go.

The Red Foxes scored five consecutive goals over the following seven minutes to take an 8-3 lead with 9:23 left in the first half. Nicole Brancaccio and Meghan Testoni netted back-to-back goals to pull Iona within three with 6:44 to go in the half. McHugh converted on a free position shot to close the half to give Marist a 9-5 lead heading into the locker room.

Marist opened the second half with three straight goals to take a 12-5 lead with 24:58 to play. Iona’s Pugh scored what would be the last goal for the Gaels at the 22:53 mark to trail the Red Foxes 12-6. Marist would net the final five goals of the game to defeat Iona 17-6.

The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, April 9 against Niagara. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
