Detroit struck first, taking a 1-0 lead with 13:09 left in the first quarter. Marist responded with five straight goals to take a 5-1 lead with 7:00 left in the opening period. Begley and Recor started off the run with two unassisted goals followed by back-to-back goals by Joka, both assisted by Radin. O’Neill took advantage of a man-up opportunity to close the run off an assist from Recor. Shayne Adams netted two consecutive goals to pull Detroit within two but Begley was able to sneak one more in before the quarter ended to give the Red Foxes a 6-3 lead at the end of the first.

Tom Masterson opened up the second quarter with two goals for the Titans to cut Marist’s lead, 6-5. Nesmith netted his lone unassisted goal of the game at the 7:47 mark to bring the Red Foxes ahead 7-5. Detroit tied the game at seven-all with 17 seconds left in the half. Montemurro added one more goal to close the half after he won the face-off and took it down for a score. Marist held an 8-7 edge at halftime.

Detroit claimed its first lead of the game since the opening minutes off goals from Adams and Brandon Beauregard. Joka completed his hat trick at the 5:32 mark in the third quarter off a pass from Recor to tie the game at nine. Osborn earned Marist a 10-9 lead with 4:44 left in the third. After seven scoreless minutes, Masterson put the Titans back on the board with a goal at the 7:23 mark to earn Detroit a 12-10 lead.
