BOSTON – Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) of the Marist men’s basketball team has been named a finalist for the 2014 Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year award.
Hart is one of 26 finalists the award. In addition to Hart, the list includes Deandre Bembry (St. Joseph's), Myles Davis (Xavier), James Daniel (Howard), Rodney Elliott (UMBC), Joel Embiid (Kansas), Tyler Ennis (Syracuse), Shannon Evans (Buffalo), Kahlil Felder (Oakland), Aaron Gordon (Arizona), Vincent Hunter (UTEP), Rysheed Jordan (St. John's), Tim Kempton (Lehigh), E.C. Matthews (Rhode Island), Jordan Mickey (LSU), Jabari Parker (Duke), London Perrantes (Virginia), Cameron Payne (Murray State), Bobby Portis (Arkansas), Julius Randle (Kentucky), Jonathan Starks (Tulane), Sindarius Thornwell (South Carolina), Noah Vonleh (Indiana), Paul Watson (Fresno), Andrew Wiggins (Kansas) and Marquis Wright (Siena).
The national finalists also comprise this year’s Kyle Macy Freshman All-America Team.
This season, Hart was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Year after being named the conference’s Rookie of the Week seven time. That total was the highest in the MAAC, as well as a Marist program record. In Marist’s 16 years in the conference, he became the first player to be named MAAC Rookie of the Year outright, and the second to win the award in total.
Hart finished his season by averaging 14.7 points, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game, all of which ranked second on the team. He shot .457 from the field, .381 from three-point range and .792 from the free-throw line. In the regular season, Hart ranked in the conference’s top 15 in scoring (14th), field goal percentage (15th), assists (13th), free throw percentage (ninth), steals (ninth), three-point percentage (12th) and minutes (eighth).
The winner of the 2014 Macy award will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet on April 4 in Dallas.
