POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s lacrosse team (3-5, 1-1 MAAC) fell to Brown (5-3, 0-1 Ivy) in a close game, 13-11. Juniors Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) and Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) each had a hat trick while Begley added one assist.

Junior Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) and sophomore Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) had two goals apiece while Nesmith dished out an assist. Freshman Connor O’Neill (Sayville, N.Y.) posted one goal for the Red Foxes. Freshman J.D. Recor (Lancaster, N.Y.) contributed two assists while senior Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.) added one. Junior goalie Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) recorded seven saves in the net for Marist.

Marist outshot Brown 46-to-24, picked up 37 ground balls to 18 for the Bears, and had 11 turnovers compare to Brown’s 17. Sophomore Dominic Montemurro (Kings Park, N.Y.) was dominant at the face-off x, winning 21-28 face-offs. Brown capitalized on 3-of-5 man up opportunities.

Brown’s Tim Jacob opened up scoring for the Bears at the 13:53 mark to give his team an early 1-0 lead. Twenty-four seconds later, Recor passed to Joka for a goal inside to knot the game at one-all. Three different Bears scored in the ensuing 10 minutes to take a 4-1 lead at the 1:52 mark in the first quarter. Begley scored back-to-back unassisted goals to close the opening quarter as Marist trailed Brown 4-3 after 15 minutes of play.

Joka scored consecutive goals to open up the second quarter, one assisted by Nesmith and another by Recor, to claim the first Red Fox lead of the game at the 12:42 mark. After almost five minutes, Sam Hurster tied the game for Brown at five-all with a goal at the 7:06 mark. Begley completed his hat trick with 4:05 to go in the second quarter as Marist claimed a 6-5 lead. Three straight goals by Brown in a 3:08 span would give the Bears a 8-6 advantage heading into halftime.

Hurster opened up the third period with a goal just 10 seconds in off an assist from Landis to pull Brown ahead 9-6. Marist’s O’Neill and Nesmith netted back-to-back goals in a comeback attempt to trail the Bears 9-8 with 4:57 to go in the third. Two more goals for Brown would increase their lead, 11-8, heading into the final 54 seconds of the quarter. Radin snuck one last goal in as time expired off an assist from Osborn to be chasing the Bears in the final quarter by a one-goal deficit.

Radin and Nesmith netted two-straight unassisted goals to open the final quarter of play to tie the score at 11 with 11:34 to go. After seven scoreless minutes, Hurster scored back-to-back goals in the final five minutes to give Brown its final 13-11 victory.

The Red Foxes return to action on Saturday, Mar. 29 vs. Manhattan. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
