PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Marist water polo team travels to Arizona State this weekend for a five-game tournament series.
As the Red Foxes reach the halfway point of their season, the team posts a 4-12 overall record, with a 1-0 start in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Junior Jessica Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) leads Marist in the season with 35 goals, 10 field blocks and 39 ejections drawn. Also for the Red Foxes, rookie Amanda Amoroso (Montreal, QC) is second on the team in goals (25) and assists (16). Junior Allison Hamby (Sacramento, Calif.) leads Marist with 22 assists, while junior Anna-Lena Hathaway (South Pasadena, Calif.) has tallied 24 steals. In net for the Red Foxes, sophomore Skyler Henry (San Diego, Calif.) has made 138 saves in 16 starts, posting 19 steals and one assist. Henry boasts a .459 save percentage and a 10.3 goals against average.
In 16 games, the Red Foxes have scored 136 goals, capitalizing on 38 of six-on-five opportunities. Marist has notched 150 steals, 122 ejections drawn and 30 field blocks, while defending 35 of its 105 man-down situations.
Marist will face off against five non-conference opponents throughout the weekend.
No. 5 Arizona State: The nationally ranked Sun Devils have compiled a 9-4 record this season, as they are currently on a two-game win streak. In their last outing, Arizona State took fifth place at the UCI Invitational, defeating UC Irvine 9-8 in sudden death overtime. The Sun Devils ended the weekend with three wins and one loss.
Azusa Pacific: The Cougars enter this weekend with a 9-12 overall record. Maryann Slama leads Azusa with 32 goals and 30 steals in 21 starts. The Cougars post an 8.84 goals against average, allowing 179 goals, while scoring 171 in their matchups. In their last outing, the team claimed a 17-16 victory over the Claremont Mudd Scripps.
Occidental: With a 2-10 overall record, the Tigers enter the weekend with a win that ended a nine-game losing streak. Occidental defeated VMI in a come-from-behind overtime victory to seal their second win of the season last weekend.
Whittier: The Poets are entering the weekend with a 9-6 overall record, a .600 season average so far.
CSU Bakersfield: Coming off a loss to USC, the Runners claim a 9-14 overall record to enter the ASU Tournament. Kristen Jensen leads the team with 39 goals (1.95 per game). The runners have tallied 200 goals to their opponents’ 263 in their 20-game span.
The Red Foxes kick off the ASU Tournament against Arizona State at 3 p.m. tomorrow, before facing off against Azusa Pacific at 8:15 p.m.
