ROCK HILL, S.C. – After a day full of rain delays yesterday, the Marist softball team was able to hit the dirt today to kick off the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational. The Red Foxes opened tournament play with a 2-0 loss to Eastern Kentucky University (EKU).

Game One

Leading the Red Foxes in hits, freshman Janna Korak (Huntsville, Ala.) and junior Taylor Kuzma (Freehold, N.J.) each claimed a hit in the outing. Also for Marist, sophomore Kyrsten Van Natta (Maplewood, N.J.) compiled four assists, while senior Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) tallied nine putouts. Junior Melanie White (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) took the loss for the day, tallying five strikeouts and allowing two earned runs in seven innings.

After four scoreless innings, the Colonels posted a solo homerun, but Marist was unable to answer back. The Red Foxes would leave three runners on base before EKU notched another run in the seventh to close out the matchup.

In the outing, Marist committed no errors while adding nine assists in the loss.

Game Two

The Red Foxes split the first day of the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational with a victory over Norfolk State. Marist jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with runs from sophomore Maureen Duddy (San Mateo, Calif.), Korak, and sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.). From there, the team never looked back.

Marist tacked on two more runs in the third inning off a homerun from junior Janine Lalli (Eastchester, N.Y.), batting in Kuzma as well. Norfolk responded with two runs, but would get no closer. The Red Foxes compiled five more runs before ending the game in five innings with a win.

Zahka led the Red Foxes with three RBI’s, while Kuzma posted two hits and two runs, and Korak added two runs with Van Natta tallying two hits in the outing. Duddy also led with six putouts, while senior Paige Lewis (Temecula, Calif.) claimed the win.

Offensively, Marist compiled 10 runs from nine hits with homers from Lalli and Zahka. In the field, the team posted nine assists while forcing Norfolk to leave eight on base with zero errors on the day.

The Red Foxes will face off against Wright State at 9 a.m. before closing out the tournament vs. Winthrop at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
