BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The Marist men's basketball suffered a 78-74 loss to Fairfield at Webster Bank Arena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game on Friday.

The Red Foxes trailed by as much as 21 in the first half, but were able to cut their deficit to three in the closing seconds. Marist trailed by 11 with 2:42 left, and scored 18 points in the final 2:19 of play.

Senior center Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) had a season high of 20 points, a career-high 19 rebounds, and five blocked shots, which tied a season high.

Kemp was one of three Red Foxes to score in double digits. Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) scored 18 points, including nine in the final 2:19 as Marist staged its comeback. Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) added 13 in large part due to a 7-for-8 free-throw shooting performance.

For Fairfield, Marcus Gilbert and Maurice Barrow tied for the game high in scoring with 22 apiece. Gilbert drained five three-pointers, all of which occurred in the first half. Barrow drained four free throws in the final 31 seconds. K.J. Rose added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Fairfield led 40-25 at halftime. Marist outscored the Stags 49-38 in the second half.

With the loss, Marist is now out of contention for an opening-round bye in next week's MAAC Tournament. The Red Foxes will be seeded either sixth, seventh or eighth, and will begin tournament play on Thursday, March 6.

Marist fell to 11-18 overall and 8-11 in MAAC play. Fairfield, which played its final regular-season game tonight, is 7-24 overall and 4-16 in the MAAC.

Marist concludes its regular season on Sunday, when the Red Foxes host Quinnipiac at 2 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the teams at McCann Arena. At approximately 1:45, the program will hold its Senior Day ceremony by honoring managers Ryan Harkins and Mickey Dennis along with Kemp, Patrick Ramsey (Easthampton, Mass.), Pieter Prinsloo (Johannesburg, South Africa), and Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.).
