DENVER, Colo. – The Marist men’s lacrosse team (1-1, 0-0 MAAC) fell to No. 5/6 Denver (2-1, 0-0 Big East) in its first game of the Frontier Airlines Face-Off Classic, 15-9. With the loss, the Red Foxes move to 1-1 overall this season.

Junior Drew Nesmith (Montclair, N.J.) led the Red Foxes with three goals. Junior Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) recorded two goals while sophomore Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) netted two goals and added an assist. Freshman J.D. Recor (Lancaster, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal alongside two assists. Sophomore Tommy Celmer (Summit, N.J.) also recorded his first career goal as well. Senior Gannon Osborn (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and junior Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) shoveled out one assist each.

Freshman Brian Corrigan (East Quogue State, N.Y.) and junior Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) shared the net for Marist. Corrigan recorded two saves in 15 minutes of play while Scarcello notched five saves in 45 minutes of play. The Red Foxes had an advantage in face-offs, winning 14-of-27, and collected 32 ground balls.

Denver opened the game on a 3-0 run to take an early lead at the 10:41 mark. Celmer got on the board first for Marist with his goal at the 7:46 mark in the first period, assisted by Radin, to cut the Pioneer lead to two. Denver’s Harrison Archer netted his second goal this season at the 6:39 mark to increase Denver’s lead, 4-1.

Nesmith notched his first goal of the night at the 5:22 mark in a man-up situation for the Red Foxes to pull Marist within two of Denver. The Pioneers scored three more goals to close the first period to take a 7-2 lead heading into the second quarter.

Denver and Marist traded goals in the second period to head into halftime with a Denver 11-5 lead. Recor struck first, recording his first collegiate goal at the 14:24 mark. Tyler Pace scored for the Pioneers to keep Denver ahead of the Red Foxes 8-3 with 12:16 to go in the second quarter.

Joka posted his first goal of the game at the 8:11 mark off a pass from Osborn. Two minutes later, Denver’s Erik Adamson scored for the Pioneers to go back up 9-4. Nesmith scored his second goal of the game a little over a minute later off an assist from Recor to cut Denver’s lead to four. Denver closed the second period with two back-to-back goals by Jack Bobzien to lead 11-5 at the half.

Joka notched his second goal of the night minutes into the third quarter, assisted by Begley, to trail the Pioneers 11-6 at the 11:20 mark. Denver’s Zach Miller netted his second goal of the game less than two minutes later to push the Pioneers ahead of Marist 12-6 at the 9:46 mark. Nesmith ended the third quarter with his third goal against Denver with 46 seconds left in the period to cut the Pioneer edge, 12-7, heading into the final quarter of play.

Radin kicked off the fourth quarter with two consecutive goals, one assisted by Recor, to pull Marist within three of Denver at the 9:52 mark. Denver closed the game with three goals, two by Wesley Berg and one by Miller, to secure its final score of 15-9 over the Red Foxes.

Marist returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 23 against Air Force in its final game of the Frontier Airlines Face-Off Classic. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. (EST).
