POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team (1-0, 0-0 MAAC) defeated Lafayette (0-1, 0-0 Patriot) in its 2014 season opener, 10-8. Junior Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) led the Red Foxes with four goals. Senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) posted two goals and tallied an assist. Junior Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hills, N.Y.) notched two goals in the second half for Marist. Sophomore Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) and junior Emily Leonard (Brookfied, Conn.) added one apiece.

Senior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) led Marist with three assists. Gionta and freshman Hayley Burke (Massapequa, N.Y.) contributed one assist each. Goalkeeper Abigail Witczak (Mendham, N.J.) recorded eight saves in the net for Marist.

Marist scored the first three goals of the game, to take a 3-0 lead with 19:04 left in the first half. Romano scored two while Viscount notched the first of her four for the Red Foxes. Larson assisted two of the three goals.

Lafayette responded by scoring the next three goals. Three different Leopards got on the board for Layfayette to knot the score at three-all with 10:50 left in the first period.

After four minutes of scoreless play, Viscount scored her second goal of the night at the 6:35 mark to pull Marist ahead, 4-3. Layfayette’s Laura Kleiber posted her second goal of the night with 15 seconds remaining in the half to tie the score at four each heading into the locker room.

Kleiber opened up the second half with her third goal of the game to pull the Leopards ahead 5-4 with 28:17 remaining in the second half.

The Leopard lead was short lived as Marist netted the next three consecutive goals. DiMaria scored her first goal of the night at the 26:56 mark off an assist from Gionta to lock the score at five-all.  Leonard gave Marist a 6-5 lead at the 26:05 mark with her lone goal of the game. Shortly after, Viscount posted her third goal of the game off an assist from Burke to push the Red Foxes ahead, 7-5.

Kleiber netted her fourth goal of the night, third unassisted, at the 23:49 mark. The Leopards trailed Marist 7-6. Just over a minute later, Amanda Case scored for Lafayette to post an even 7-7 score heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

After 11 scoreless minutes, DiMaria scored her second goal of the night at the 11:35 mark to give Marist an 8-7 lead. Kirsten Wilhelmsen scored her second goal for Lafayette to post another tied score with 8:35 left in the second half.

The Red Foxes closed the game strong with back-to-back goals. Viscount scored her fourth goal of the night at the 7:40 mark, giving Marist its final lead of the game. Gionta scored the final goal of the night for the Red Foxes at the 4:22 mark. With a scoreless final four minutes, Marist defeated Lafayette, 10-8.

Marist returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 vs. Vermont. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at Tenney Stadium. Admission is free and open to the public.
