POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- The Marist men’s lacrosse team heads to Stony Brook on Friday, Feb. 14 for its 2014 season opener. The Red Foxes were selected to finish third in this year’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Sophomore Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) and junior captain Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) were named to the All-MAAC Preseason team.
Last Season: The Red Foxes finished the 2013 season with a 10-4 regular season record and 5-1 in the MAAC. Marist was co-MAAC regular season champions and entered the tournament as the number one seed. In the MAAC tournament the Red Foxes fell during the first round to Detroit 7-6. Marist finished in the top 25 in the country in 11 of the 14 categories and had the program’s first All-American in Connor Rice.
Last Meeting: Last season Marist beat Stony Brook in the season’s home opener 13-9. Mike Begley (Brookeville, Md.) had three goals while Scarcello had 12 saves in the net for Marist. Three graduated players also scored three goals apiece for the Red Foxes, while reigning MAAC Rookie of the year, Radin, added a goal of his own. The Red Foxes have defeated the Seawolves in back-to-back contests. In each of the four Marist victories, the Red Foxes have scored in double digits.
Scouting Stony Brook: The Seawolves are picked to finish second in the America East Preseason Poll. Stony Brook finished last season 7-9 and 2-3 in the America East. Stony Brook is returning seven starters and 23 letterwinners from last year's squad. The Seawolves return four of their top five leading scorers and two strong defensemen.
Following this matchup, Marist heads to Denver, Colo. for a two-game slate; vs. Denver on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3:30 p.m. and vs. Air Force on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m.
