EDISON, N.J. – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) released its Preseason Coaches’ Poll today, with Marist being favored to win the conference in 2014, according to a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Marist received 110 points in the poll, while Fairfield followed with 105 points. Last season, the Red Foxes claimed the MAAC Championship title over No. 2 seed Fairfield to clinch its berth to the NCAA Regionals.

Also for the Red Foxes, sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) was selected as the Co-Player of the Year, along with Fairfield’s Lauren Liseth. She was also named to the All-MAAC team, selected at both outfielder and designated player. Cheek was last year’s Rookie of the Year after leading the MAAC with 15 homers, 52 RBI and 122 total bases. Cheek was also second in the MAAC with 64 hits, and second in runs scored with 43.

Senior captain Alyssa Zahka (Lexington, Mass.) was also named to the All-MAAC team as a utility player. Last season, Zahka appeared in all 56 games, making 55 starts for the Red Foxes. She finished the year with a team high .371 batting average, and had 63 hits during the season with 41 RBI’s and eight homeruns.
