POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Women’s Crew has announced its upcoming spring schedule, as the Red Foxes prepare to kick off their 2014 season in March with the hopes of earning the program’s 11th Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title.

“The women's crew has returned to campus ready to work toward defending our MAAC Championship and returning to the NCAA's as a stronger competitor and representative of the MAAC Conference,” said Head Coach Tom Sanford. “Our senior leadership is setting the tone early and the atmosphere of our land workouts has been enthusiastic and competitive so far.”

The Red Foxes start competition during Spring Break, where the team will travel to Clemson, S.C. for its training trip. Marist returns to action on March 30 at the Iona Invitational, where it will take on Iona, Fairfield, Fordham, Lehigh, and RMU. The team then moves on to the UConn Invitational, where they will face off against UConn, Trinity and USCGA on April 5. The following day, the Red Foxes will compete against Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Iona and Drake at the Sacred Heart Invitational.

To finish out the regular season, Marist travels to New Rochelle for the Spring Metro vs. Iona, Fairfield, NYU, Sarah Lawrence, and Stonybrook. After that, both the men’s and women’s teams will host the President’s Cup on April 19 against Army and Iona.

Sanford sees each competition as a preparation toward the team’s ultimate goal: a second consecutive conference title. “We respect our competitors in the MAAC and know each is motivated to beat us,” he said. “This understanding will be utilized to motivate us to work harder throughout the winter months on land.”

To close out the season, the Red Foxes will look to earn another MAAC Title on April 26-27, at which they will move on to the NCAA Championships from May 30 to June 1 in Indianapolis, Ind., if the team qualifies during MAAC’s.

“We will encounter excellent crews each week during our racing season leading up to our championship, and we will use these races to test our speed, our lineups, and our mental and physical toughness to enable us to be in top form on April 26th,” Sanford stated.

Before season’s ending, Marist will compete at the NYS Championships from May 3-4, as well as the Dad Vail Regatta on May 10.

Until the start of the season, Sanford has one last hope through these wintry months to prepare the Red Foxes for their upcoming season, “Let's hope the river thaws sometime before April 26th.”
