POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist men's basketball team defeated Monmouth 75-73 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at McCann Arena on Thursday night.

For Marist, junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 24 points. Lewis also had team highs of seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. He had a highlight reel dunk in the first half among his seven made field goals, which included a 3-for-7 output from three-point range. Lewis also knocked down seven of his nine free-throw attempts.

Lewis was one of four Red Foxes to score in double digits. Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) had 17 points, four rebounds and two assists. Senior forward Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) scored 11, and senior center Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) finished with 10 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.

Deon Jones led a balanced Monmouth scoring attack with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds. Tyrone O’Garro had a game-high 11 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.

Monmouth got off to a fast start, and led by as much as 11 midway through the first half. Marist responded with a 7-0 spurt to get back in the game, and roared into halftime on an 18-2 run over the final six minutes of the first half. The Red Foxes led by nine at the break, 43-34.

Marist expanded its lead early in the second half to as much as 10, but two free throws by Monmouth’s Khalil Brown tied the game with 11:53 left. Marist then expanded its lead back to 10 with 5:47 left, but Monmouth fought until the bitter end. The Hawks closed their deficit to one twice in the final minute, but the Red Foxes prevailed in large part due to going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds. Included in this stretch were a pair of made free throws by Lewis, and three from junior forward Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.).

Marist is now 7-14 overall and 4-7 in MAAC play; Monmouth is 10-12 overall and also 4-7 in the MAAC.

Marist returns to action on Saturday night against Niagara at McCann Arena. Tip-off is at 7 p.m., and the contest will be aired on ESPN3. Marist will honor its basketball alumni at halftime, and an alumni game will take place at 2 p.m.
