STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Marist men's lacrosse team (1-0, 0-0 MAAC) defeated Stony Brook (0-1, 0-0 AE) in its 2014 season opener, 13-12. The Red Foxes have won the last three straight contests against the Seawolves under head coach Keegan Wilkinson.

Junior Colin Joka (Conshohocken, Pa.) scored a career-high seven goals in the victory. Junior Drew Nesmith (Monclair, N.J.) matched a career-high four goals. Junior Patrick Eaker (Redding, Conn.) scored one goal while sophomore Dominic Montemurro (Kings Park, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal. Freshman J.D. Recor (Lancaster, N.Y.) led Marist with four assists and sophomore Joseph Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) contributed one.

Junior goalie Dave Scarcello (Buffalo, N.Y.) made eight saves in the net during 30 minutes of play while freshman keeper Brian Corrigan (East Quogue State, N.Y.) recorded three in his 30 minutes.

Nesmith opened the game for Marist with an early unassisted goal to take a 1-0 lead with 11:11 left in the first quarter. 

Chris Hughes scored his first goal of the game for Stony Brook off a pass from Matt Schultz with 7:54 remaining in the first period to knot the game at one-all. 

Joka scored his first of six goals at the 4:48 mark in the first quarter, assisted by Recor. Marist took a 2-1 lead to close the first period.

Stony Brook opened up the second quarter with back-to-back goals by Hughes and Brody Eastwood to take a 3-2 lead with 10:55 to play in the second period. 

Seconds later, at the 10:17 mark, Joka locked the game back at three with his second goal of the night, assisted by Radin. The Seawolves went back on top 4-3 at the 8:55 mark with a goal by Mike Rooney.

Nesmith weaved to the net for another unassisted goal just 40 seconds later to tie the game at four apiece with 8:15 to play until the half. 

Stony Brook's Eastwood netted his second goal of the night just 13 seconds later to five the Seawolves a 5-4 edge with 8:02 left in the second quarter. The Stony Brook lead was short lived as Joka drilled two-consecutive, his third and fourth, unassisted goals to take a 6-5 lead at the 4:55 mark. 

Seawolves' Matt Balzano scored sa goal with 24 seconds on the clock to make it an even 6-6 score heading into the locker room.

Stony Brook's Rooney opened up the third quarter with a goal at the 13:53 mark to momentarily take a 7-6 lead. Six seconds later, Montemurro scored his first collegiate goal, and the first of three consecutive for Marist, to tie the game at 7.

Nesmith and Eaker scored one goal apiece over the following two minutes to pull the Red Foxes ahead, 9-7 with 11:23 left in the third quarter.

Back-to-back goals for Stony Brook by Challen Rogers and Schultz would cut Marist's lead and tie the game back at nine-all.

Joka knocked down his fifth goal of the night, assisted by Recor for the second time, to take a 10-9 lead at the 7:17 mark. Less than a minute later, Nesmith scored his fourth unassisted goal of the game to lift the Red Foxes over Stony Brook by two with 6:34 left in the third period.

Eastwood would score his third goal for the Seawolves at the 5:14 mark, pulling within one of Marist with 5:14 left in the third quarter.

Two straight goals by Joka, his sixth and seventh of the game, gave Marist a 13-10 lead to close the third period. Both goals were assisted by Recor, giving him four on the night. 

Stony Brook scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter, but the Seawolves' comback attempt fell short as Marist defeated Stony Brook, 13-12.

The Red Foxes head to Denver, Colo. for the Frontier Airlines Classic on Saturday Feb. 22 and Sunday, Feb. 23. Marist faces Devner on the 22nd at 3:30 p.m. and Air Force on Sunday at 1 p.m.
