POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist women's basketball team (15-5, 9-1 MAAC) defeated Niagara (6-13, 4-6 MAAC) on Saturday evening, 61-52. The Red Foxes improved to 9-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with the win. Sophomore Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) and senior Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) scored 13 points apiece. Dulin had a game high 10 assists and two steals. Senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) recorded 10 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt junior Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) had 10 points and grabbed five boards for the Red Foxes.

Marist opened up the game on an 8-2 surge to take an early six point lead with 18 minutes to play. Over the following six minutes, Niagara posted a 12-0 run to lead 14-8 with just under 12 minutes to play. Coffey, who shot a perfect 8-8 from the line tonight, hit two free-throws to break up the run but the Purple Eagles posted another unanswered five points to lead 19-10 with eight minutes left in the first half. The Red Foxes went on an 8-0 run to pull within one at the 3:10 mark. A layup by Niagara’s Victoria Rampado put the Purple Eagles up by three but Dulin tied it at 21 with a triple at the 2:34 mark. A Jarosz jumper and free throw shot by Rampado ended the half as Marist led 23-22 halfway through.

An evenly matched opening three minutes posted the third tied score of the game at 27 all with 17 minutes to go. Marist took its largest lead of the game so far at the 11:11 mark, up 38-31. A 10-2 run by Niagara pulled the Purple Eagles ahead 41-40 with eight minutes to play. Ockenden sinks a layup, followed by a jumper by Niagara’s Val McQuade kept the Purple Eagles on top. Senior Emma O'Connor (Lybrook, N.Y.) hit two long threes, split by a free-throw trip by Niagara’s Meghan McGuinness, to post a 48-45 score at the 5:17 mark.

The Purple Eagles outscored Marist 7-4 over the following three minutes, knotting the game up at 52 with two and a half minutes remaining. Ockenden hit a three to pull Marist ahead, 55-52 with two minutes to play. With the ball back in Niagara’s hands, Dulin and sophomore Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) made two huge defensive stops to keep the Purple Eagles scoreless. The Red Foxes closed the half on a 9-0 run to win the game.

The Red Foxes conclude their home slate with a game on Wednesday, Jan. 29 against Rider. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at McCann Arena. Tickets available on GoRedFoxes.com.
