POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s basketball team (11-5, 5-1 MAAC) fell to Iona (13-2, 6-0) on Monday, 73-71, in a battle for sole claim of first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). This is the first conference loss suffered by the Red Foxes this year and first loss since Nov. 23. Sophomore Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) posted a team-high 17 points and four assists. Senior Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) scored 16 points and sophomore Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) posted 11. Senior Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) recorded her second career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

In a first half highlighted by 10 tied scores and seven lead changes, it’s only fitting that Marist and Iona were tied in a 32-32 draw at halftime. The teams shot basket-for-basket over the first ten minutes of play. The Red Foxes took the largest lead of the half at the 9:10 mark, posting a 19-14 advantage over the Gaels.

Iona battled back, knotting the score at 20 apiece with just under eight minutes left. The play over the ensuing five minutes mimicked the first ten minutes of the half, resulting in a 26-26 lock at the 3:22 mark. A layup by red-shirt junior Tori Jarosz (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and a perfect trip to the line by Dulin gave Marist a four point lead with 1:40 to go. Iona’s Aleesha Powell made two of her eight points in the first half to pull within two. Jarosz hit a jumper, putting the Red Foxes back up by four. Free-throws by Iona’s Aaliyah Robinson and a layup by Damika Martinez tied the game back at 32 as the teams headed into the locker room.

Dulin opened up the second half with a layup to take a two point lead before Martinez tied it up again at 34. Ockenden jumper gave Marist another two point lead which was again taken away by Martinez, tied at 36 with 17:11 to play. The Red Foxes went on a 10-0 run over the following three minutes, leading by ten with just under 15 minutes to play.

Joy Adams broke the silence for Iona, knocking down a layup, followed by a jumper by Martinez to pull within six. Blais sinks a three from the outside, pulling Marist ahead by nine with 12:57 to play. Two consecutive baskets by the Gaels brought Iona within five but Dulin responded with a layup to widen the gap to seven. Robinson hit two straight threes followed by two free-throws by Powell and yet another three by Robinson to give Iona its first lead of the second half, 57-56 at the 7:32 mark. The teams shot basket-for-basket over the following two minutes as Robinson hit her fourth three of the second half to put the Gales on top, 63-62 with 5:06 to play.

Adams laid in the ball for Iona, followed by a layup by O’Connor as Marist trailed by one. Martinez sinks a jumper, followed by two free-throws by Powell, giving Iona a 69-64 lead with 2:09 to go. Three points from Blais and two consecutive layups from O’Connor locked the game at 71 with 24 seconds remaining in the game and the ball in Iona’s hands. The Gaels held the ball until the three second mark and Martinez sank the fade-away jumper to give Iona a 73-71 victory.

Following this matchup, Marist heads to Buffalo for a two game MAAC slate; Niagara on Friday, Jan. 17 and Canisius on Sunday, Jan. 19. Tip-off for Friday’s game is set for 11:00 am and Sunday’s game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
