Women's Basketball To Face Undefeated Iona In First Place Battle
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist women’s basketball team (11-4, 5-0 MAAC) hosts Iona (12-2, 5-0) on Monday, Jan. 12. The Red Foxes and the Gaels are both currently undefeated in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Tickets available for purchase on GoRedFoxes.com. Head coach Brian Giorgis is 176-27 in the MAAC since coming to Marist in 2002-03. The Red Foxes are just two wins away from the programs 200th conference win, standing at 198-95 since joining the MAAC in 1997-98. Marist and Iona are the only two undefeated teams remaining in the MAAC. The Red Foxes are vying for their 10th MAAC Championship title, ninth consecutive, and 11th MAAC regular season title.
The Red Foxes most recently defeated Fairfield, 60-36, the lowest points allowed this season and maintained their undefeated record. Senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) led all players with 15 points, shooting 6-9 from the field. Ockenden matched a career-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Madeline Blais (Exter, N.H.) posted 12 points and four rebounds. Seniors Casey Dulin (Milford, Conn.) and Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) recorded nine points apiece. Dulin had five rebounds and four assists while O’Connor had four boards and a team-high three steals.
Iona is on an 11 game winning streak and has not lost since Nov. 12, 2013 (St. John’s, 78-48). Marist has not lost since Nov. 23, 2013 (Ohio State, 62-59). This is the 42nd overall meeting between Marist and Iona; The series is 32-9 overall in favor of Marist and the Red Foxes have won the last 29 consecutive meetings, including a 72-48 victory in the 2013 MAAC Championship game. The Red Foxes and the Gaels have played in the MAAC championship game three times in the past six years, Marist claiming victory in all three (64-57 in overtime in 2007, 83-63 in 2008, 72-48 in 2013).
Marist is undefeated this season in games scoring at least 70 points and shooting t least .450 from the field. The Red Foxes have also held opponents to shooting under .390 on seven occasions this year. Three Red Foxes average double digit scoring (Blais 15.1, Ockenden 13.9, O’Connor, 13.3), and three Gaels average in double-digits (Martinez 25.2, Adams 18.5, Powell 12.7)
Following this matchup, Marist heads to Buffalo for two MAAC matchups; Friday, Jan 17 vs. Nigara and Sunday, Jan. 19 vs. Canisius.
