CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Marist men's basketball team gave Jeff Bower his first career victory as head coach of the Red Foxes on Sunday with a 69-62 road victory over College of Charleston.

Marist had a game-high lead of 15 at halftime. The Red Foxes lead was cut to two on three occasions in the second half, but continuous big plays at crucial times kept the Cougars from tying or taking the lead.

Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led four Marist scorers in double digits with 18 points on efficient shooting (5-for-10 from the field, 3-for-5 from three-point range, 5-for-6 from the free-throw line). Lewis added six rebounds, a game-high four steals and three assists.

Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) had 16 points, three rebounds and three assists. Junior guard T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 12 points, four assists and three rebounds, including a pair of three-pointers in the first 4:01 of the game. Senior center Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) tallied 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Both of Kemp’s blocks came in the final four minutes of the game.

Willis Hall led College of Charleston (4-6) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Anthony Stitt had 14 points, four rebounds and four assists.

College of Charleston led for the first four minutes, but a three-pointer by Curry at the 15:59 mark of the first half tied the game at nine apiece. The Cougars never led after that, and Curry’s shot started the Red Foxes on a 14-4 run over the next 4:18. Marist then expanded its lead by holding the Cougars scoreless over the final 3:33 of the first half, as the Red Foxes ended the first period on an 8-0 run.

With 7:43 to play, a tip-in by Hall capped a 14-3 run for the Cougars, which cut the Red Foxes’ lead to 56-54. Hart answered with a basket on the ensuing possession to put Marist back up by four. Anthony Thomas had a tip-in on the next possession for College of Charleston to cut Marist’s lead back to two with 6:45 left, but a jumper by Curry made the score a 60-56 with 5:09 left. Adjehi Baru hit two free throws to bring the Cougars back within two with 4:49 left, but a three-point play by Lewis with 3:40 to go gave Marist a five-point lead. The Cougars never got any closer after that.

Marist now returns to McCann Arena for four consecutive home games, including the team’s final two non-conference games of the regular season. The Red Foxes open the homestand against Bucknell on Friday, Dec. 20 at 7 p.m. For ticket information, contact the Marist Ticket Office at (845) 575-3553.
