POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist softball team has released its Spring 2014 schedule as it looks to claim the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship title for the second consecutive year, third in program history.
Marist finished the 2013 season 9-7 in the MAAC conference, and 30-27 overall. After winning the MAAC title last season, Marist went on to fall to the first-seeded Oklahoma as well as Fordham in the NCAA Tournament.
With the success of last year’s conference title lingering, Head Coach Joe Ausanio is excited about this year’s schedule. “We get to see a lot of new teams we haven't played before, and the highlight of the season is traveling for Spring Break to Florida for the first time in four years.”
This season, the Red Foxes will host five MAAC doubleheaders, while also competing against six non-conference opponents at Gartland Athletic Field throughout the season.
The Red Foxes will begin their 54-game campaign with five games at the Mercer Bear Classic. To start the tournament, the Red Foxes will take on Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne at 11 a.m. on Feb. 28. Marist will go on to compete against Mercer and NC Central in the tournament as well.
The following weekend, Marist will face off in the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational against Youngtown State, Winthrop, Eastern Kentucky Norfolk State, and Wright State.
The team will also travel to Florida for Spring Break for the first time in four years. Marist will look to compete against Bethune Cookman, Florida A&M, University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, Jacksonville, and Stetson from March 15-20.
Marist kicks off its home schedule on March 25 with a doubleheader against Columbia at 2:30 p.m. The Red Foxes move on to three doubleheaders on the road before returning to Gartland Athletic Field to take on MAAC opponent Manhattan on April 6 at 12 and 2 p.m.
The Red Foxes kick off conference play at Fairfield on March 29 for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Marist will face off against six of its MAAC rivals throughout April, while four non-conference doubleheaders are scheduled in between. Conference play will be broken up by the team’s last non-conference doubleheader at Lafyette on April 30, before Marist finishes the season versus MAAC rivals Siena, and hosts Canisius and Saint Peter’s to close out the regular season in May.
The 2014 MAAC Tournament will be held at Fairfield University. The top four regular season teams will meet in a double elimination championship tournament beginning on Thursday, May 8 and running through Saturday, May 10.
