SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Marist women’s basketball team defeated St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center, walking away with a 68-51 victory. Sophomore Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) scored a career high 25 points with an additional three rebounds. Blais was also named the Hall of Fame Challenge Player of the Game. Senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted 15 points and a game-high four steals and senior Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) contributed 10 points. Junior Natalie Gomez-Martinez (Andover, Mass.) had a game high five assists and three steals and freshman Katharine Fogarty (Peterborough, N.H.) recorded a team high five rebounds.
Blais scored the first of her 25 points on a three-pointer with 18:17 remaining in the first half to give Marist an early 3-0 lead. The Red Foxes would never give up their lead, holding the advantage the entire game. Marist opened up the game with an 8-0 run, fueled by Blais and Ockenden. St. Bonaventure posted its first point of the game with 16:53 remaining in the first half off a free-throw shot to trail 8-1. The Red Foxes went on a 35- 16 run to close the half, leading the Bonnies 43-17 at halftime.
The second half opened up with a Marist 10-8 run to take 28 point lead, its largest of the game, with 14:46 left in the second half. In the second half, Blais scored nine points, O’Connor scored six, and sophomore Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) scored four to help Marist maintain its lead. Although the Bonnies outscored Marist 34-25 in the second half, it was to no avail as the Red Foxes improved to 3-4 overall with a 68-51 victory over St. Bonaventure. Marist shot 49 percent from the field, 38.9 percent from three-point range, and 84.6 percent from the free-throw line.
The Red Foxes open up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Friday, Dec. 6 against Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and can be watched live on ESPN3.
