Marist Drops Overtime Contest To Morgan State In Paradise Jam
ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS -- The Marist men's basketball team was defeated in overtime by Morgan State by a score of 74-67 on Monday. The game was the Red Foxes' final one in the 2013 Ezybonds Paradise Jam.
Senior forward Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) led Marist with 22 points. Bowie shot 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-6 from three-point range. The point total was just one off his career high, and he added seven rebounds. The Red Foxes totaled four double-digit scorers, as Bowie was joined by junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) with 15, senior center Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) with 12 and red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) with 10. Senior center Pieter Prinsloo (Johannesburg, South Africa) had a career-high 10 rebounds.
For Morgan State, Ian Chiles led all scorers with 25 points to go along with nine rebounds, seven blocked shots and three assists. Justin Black had 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Cedric Blossom added 16 points and eight rebounds, and shot 5-for-5 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
The game had 12 lead changes and six ties, and neither team led by more than nine points. The Bears held an 18-9 lead after a three-pointer by Black with 12:46 left in the first half. However, the Red Foxes answered with a 13-2 run over the next 5:28 to take the lead. Morgan State fought back and held Marist to just two points over the final 5:39 of the first half, and took a 30-28 lead to the locker room.
The Red Foxes used a 10-1 run to take a 57-49 lead, their largest of the game, with 7:09 to play. Morgan State immediately answered with a 9-0 run to take the lead back with five minutes to play. With 2:20 left, a three-point play by Hart gave the Red Foxes a 62-60 lead, but Morgan State tied the game with two free throws by Blossom with 1:12 to go. Neither team scored in the remainder of regulation.
With 3:06 left in overtime, a layup by Chiles gave Morgan State the lead for good. The Red Foxes were 1-for-5 from the field with three turnovers in the extra period.
Marist fell to 0-7; Morgan State is 1-6. The Red Foxes return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4, when they open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Iona.
