Marist Women’s Lacrosse Debuts 2014 Schedule
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Athletics Department and women’s lacrosse head coach Jessica O'Brien released the schedule for the 2014 season on Tuesday. The women’s lacrosse team finished the 2013 season 9-10 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Following a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship appearance in 2013, the Red Foxes will face a challenging 17 game schedule, including eight conference matchups and home contests.
Marist kicks off the season with two home games; Saturday, Feb. 15 vs. Lafayette and Saturday, Feb. 22 vs. Vermont. Both opponents defeated the Red Foxes last season (Lafayette 12-8, Vermont 16-9). The squad then hits the road for a five game road trip, starting at USC on Friday, Feb. 28 against USC then Sunday, March 2 vs. Fresno State. The Red Foxes then face Hofstra on Friday, March 7. Hofstra defeated Marist last season 14-8. On Wednesday, March 12 women’s lacrosse faces Bucknell then George Mason on Monday, March 17. Marist defeated Bucknell, 14-11, but fell to George Mason last season, 10-9.
The Red Foxes return home for two games against Stetson on Friday, March 21 and Binghamton on Wednesday, March 26. Marist defeated both opponents last season; Stetson 21-8 and Binghamton 11-6.
Marist opens up MAAC play on Wednesday, April 2 against Canisius. The Red Foxes lost to the Golden Griffins twice last season in its last game of the regular season 16-13 and in the MAAC championship game, 10-9.
The Red Foxes close out the season with the rest of its MAAC conference games, starting with two home matches against Iona on Saturday, April 5 and Niagara on Wednesday April 9. The Red Foxes defeated Iona 19-5 and Niagara 22-8 in 2013. Marist then faces MAAC newcomer, Quinnipiac, on Sunday, April 13.
On Wednesday, April 16 Marist hosts Manhattan, who they defeated last season 22-8. The Red Foxes will then hit the road for a pair of road games against Fairfield and Siena. Marist lost to Fairfield in the 2013 season, 9-8, but redeemed itself in the MAAC semi-finals with a 7-6 victory to advance to the championship. Marist also defeated Siena last season, 13-4.
Marist returns home for its final game of the 2014 season on Saturday, April 26 against MAAC newcomer Monmouth.
The 2014 women’s lacrosse MAAC championships are held at Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y. on Friday, May 2 through Sunday, May 4.
