Marist Volleyball Clinches MAAC Finals Tournament Bid
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team claimed a 3-2 victory (25-15, 31-29. 22-25, 19-25, 15-9) over the Iona Gaels in the Semifinal Round of the Metro Atlantic Athletic (MAAC) Tournament today.
Sophomore Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) led the Red Foxes with 20 kills, while sophomore Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Co.) added 18 kills in the win. Junior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) went 14-3-35, posting a .314 attack percentage while also adding a team-high two blocks. Senior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) tallied a team-high 56 assists for the day, while freshman Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) added six service aces. Junior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) also added a match-high 26 digs for the victory.
The Red Foxes went 64-19-176, claiming a .256 attack percentage in the victory. Marist posted 11 team blocks to Iona’s seven, while also tallying a .902 serving percentage and 77 digs.
Marist posted two service aces from Lexi Millington in its 4-0 run to start the first set. Halfway through, the Red Foxes maintained the lead, as Stephens claimed a kill to make it 13-6. Marist continued to reclaim a seven-point lead off of a kill from Lahey, making it 16-9. Shaw and Gassman came up with a block to assist the Red Foxes in posting an eight-point lead over the Gaels. At the end of the set, Marist went on a 4-1 run. Iona scored a point to bring it within nine, but that was as close as the Gaels would get. Stephens, Shaw and Lahey all contributed four kills in the first set, while Brady claimed 12 of the Red Foxes’ 13 assists, and Millington had two service aces.
The second set saw seven ties and six lead changes to start. A kill from Shaw helped the Red Foxes to make it nine-all. The Red Foxes capitalized on an Iona attack error to take the lead. Halfway through the first set, the match was tied at 14-all. Iona went on a three-point run to post a 17-14 lead. After trailing 18-24, the Red Foxes erased the deficit with a 6-0 run to tie the set at 24 off of a kill from Lahey. The end of the second set saw six tie scores before Marist took the set 31-29.
Going up two sets to none, the Red Foxes went 29-6-65 for a .354 attack percentage. Lahey and Shaw both posted nine kills between the first two sets, while Brady tallied 26 assists. The Red Foxes claimed eight team blocks to the Gaels’ three.
The Gaels claimed the lead to start the third set. After a kill from Stephens and a three-point run, the Red Foxes brought the set within two (7-9). Halfway through the set, Marist posted a kill from Lahey to make it 12-14. The Red Foxes consistently brought the set within two, but were unable to take the lead until the team capitalized on a hitting error by Iona to tie the match at 20.
After a five-point run the Red Foxes reclaimed the lead (21-20) for the first time in the third set.
Iona came back to tie and reclaim the lead before taking the third set 25-22.
The Red Foxes answered right back in the fourth set, jumping out to claim two points. Iona would tie it two more times before taking the lead. Halfway through the fourth set, the Red Foxes trailed by five points (7-12). The Red Foxes capitalized on a hitting error to bring it within four. After a kill by Lahey, Marist went on a four-point run to make it 12-14. Iona claimed a point before Lahey answered back with a kill. Down by five (15-20), Marist went on a two-point run to bring it within three. Marist committed two hitting errors to put the Gaels up 23-18 before Iona tied the match at two-all, taking the fourth set.
With the match up for grabs, Marist jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth set. The Red Foxes continued their scoring streak with a kill from Shaw. Halfway through the fifth set, Jones posted a kill to give Marist a six-point lead (8-2). Iona brought it within three (12-9) before Shaw answered with a kill. The Red Foxes claimed the fifth set’s match-point with a kill.
The Red Foxes move on to compete against the No. 1 seeded Fairfield Stags tomorrow in the MAAC Tournament Finals. The match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. at Alumni Recreation Center on the campus of Siena College. Watch live at MAAC.tv, and follow updates on Twitter @MaristAthletics.
