Marist Volleyball Clinches MAAC Playoff Spot With 3-0 Win Over Saint Peter's
Marist volleyball clinched a playoff spot today with its 3-0 win over Saint Peters. During Saturday afternoons Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match, the Red Foxes cruised to their victory by winning the sets 25-20, 25-14, and 25-14.
Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) had a team high 15 digs and is now tied for the single season record for most digs with 280, set by Emily Brosky in 2009. Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) lead the team in kills with 13 and also had five blocking assists. Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) had eight kills while Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) had six. Becca Jones (Arlington, Ohio) had a team high four service aces and seven kills. Setter, Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.), had 35 assists, five kills, three blocking assists, and two services aces.
From the beginning of the first set, the Red Foxes dominated jumping out to a 9-2 lead, off three kills my Stephens and two services aces one by Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and the other by Jones. Marist stayed strong through the middle of the set leading 19-13 thanks to three by Lahey and two by Stephens. Saint Peter’s went on a short run at the end but a kill by Shaw ended set one with a Red Fox win, 25-20.
The second set started off with three big kills by Stephens and a service ace by Liz Gassman (Glenside, Pa.) to give Marist another early match lead at 10-5. Three back to back kills by Stephens, Lahey, and Shaw helped keep the Red Foxes up 16-10. Later in the match Marist went on a 6-0 run, led by a service ace by Millington and kills by Brady, Stephens, and Jones. Jones ended set two with a service ace, securing the seconded set win, 25-14.
During the third set, the Red Foxes served up five service aces by Jones, Brady, Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.), Millington, and Gassman, giving the Foxes the lead during the middle of the set 19-8. A big kill by Hill helped keep the Red Foxes momentum going. After multiple errors by Saint Peters and a game ending kill by Gabriella Lutjen (Smithtown, N.Y.), Marist won the third set 25-14.
The Red Foxes last match of the regular season will be tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 17 where Marist will honor its seniors. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at McCann Arena against Rider. With a win the Red Foxes would claim the title of MAAC co-champions for the first time in school history.
