ALBANY, N.Y. – The Marist women’s basketball team fell to the University at Albany on Thursday evening, 69-59. Senior Leanne Ockenden (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the team in both points and rebounds with 18 and six, respectively. All of Ockenden’s points were three-point baskets, finishing the night 6-12 from beyond the arc. Senior Emma O'Connor (Lynbrook, N.Y.) contributed 17 points and five rebounds and sophomore Madeline Blais (Exeter, N.H.) recorded 16 points and five rebounds. Junior Natalie Gomez-Martinez (Andover, Mass.) and Ockenden led the Red Foxes with five assists each.
For the Great Danes, standout sophomore Shereesha Richards posted a double-double with 28 points and 15 rebounds.
UAlbany came out strong, taking a 13-6 lead at the first timeout. Marist closed the gap to three with jumpers from Blais and O’Connor. The Great Danes then went on an 8-3 run to take a 21-13 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Marist responded with a 14-4 run to take its first lead of the night, 27-25, with 3:50 left in the half. O’Connor posted two layups followed by three-pointers from Ockenden and sophomore Sydney Coffey (Hopkins, Minn.) to fuel the run. Three-pointers from O’Connor and Ockenden and a pair of free-throws from Blais would give Marist its 35-30 lead heading into halftime.
Following a 19-12 run by UAlbany, the Great Danes regained the lead with 12:34 left in regulation. An 8-0 run, in which Richards had four points, quickly gave UAlbany a 10 point lead midway through the second half. Ockenden hit two consecutive three-pointers to bring Marist within six, but the Red Foxes were unable to regain the lead. The Great Danes ended the game with a 8-6 run to secure their 69-59 victory.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, Nov. 17 on the road at Princeton. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
