Marist Men's Basketball Suffers Loss At Saint Joseph's
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Marist men's basketball team suffered an 81-62 loss to Saint Joseph's of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Wednesday night.
Junior swingman Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 26 points. Lewis added a team-high five rebounds, tied for the team high with three assists, and added a blocked shot. He shot 9-for-20 from the field, and 6-for-7 from the free-throw line in a game-high 36 minutes of action.
Senior forward Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) added 11 points, three rebounds and three assists on 4-for-5 shooting from the field. Senior center Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) returned to the Marist lineup after a one-game absence due to injury to post six points and four rebounds in 19 minutes. Kemp shot 3-for-3 from the field. Red-shirt freshman guard Khallid Hart (Newark, Del.) contributed seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Langston Galloway led Saint Joseph's (2-0) with 20 points. Galloway shot 6-for-8 from the field. Ronald Roberts (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Halil Kanacevic (12 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks) both had double-doubles for the Hawks.
Saint Joseph’s held a 47-26 edge in rebounds, shot .492 (30-for-61) from the field, and .438 (7-for-16) from three-point range. The Hawks shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, and connected on six of 10 three-point attempts. Marist shot .393 (22-for-56) from the field and .240 (6-for-25) from three-point range, although the Red Foxes hit six of 14 attempts from deep in the second half. The Red Foxes committed just nine turnovers in the game, while the Hawks had 12.
Marist never led in the game, as Saint Joseph’s jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first three-and-a-half minutes in the game. The Red Foxes cut the deficit to as little as five on three separate occasions in the first half, but drew no closer. The Hawks extended their lead to 40-25 at halftime, and led by as much as 24 in the second half. Saint Joseph’s held a 41-37 lead over Marist in scoring in the second half, which featured hot shooting from both sides.
Marist (0-3) will return to action on Saturday at Providence. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m., and the game is scheduled to be televised by Fox Sports 2.
