POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The men’s tennis team has named its captains for the 2014 season. The Red Foxes chose their three team captains differently this season compared to the past. Ultimately, seniors Jacob Solly (Sydney, Australia) and Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.), and junior Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) were chosen for individual reasons.
After a handful of players expressed interest in the position, Head Coach Tim Smith chose Solly based on his rationale on why he should be captain.
Last season, Solly finished 3-4 in singles and 1-2 in doubles play, winning his final two matches in conference singles play. In his first three years at Marist, he is 11-9 in singles play while claiming an 8-4 record in doubles, posting a 19-13 overall record.
With one choice underway, Smith made the remaining decisions for the other two captains’ positions as a collective choice. He met with his returner and new captain Solly, as well as Assistant Coaches Ron Lane and Jason Sacher. The crew chose Klassen due to his hard work to move up the ranks, “earning it from an on-court level,” according to Smith.
Before being named MAAC Player of the Year and receiving All-MAAC First Team honors (Co-Second Singles, First Doubles), Klassen went 23-10 in singles and 15-13 in doubles play last season. He won eight consecutive singles matches, one victory being in the tournament finals in the USTA Invitational.
The final decision for Giudici to fill the other captain’s position came from “the energies he put in taking care of details and mentoring freshmen Dylan Fletcher,” said Smith.
As a sophomore, Giudici went 6-1 in singles and 9-10 in doubles play. He opened the 2012-13 season with five consecutive wins, adding to his 38-24 overall record in his first two seasons at Marist.
