POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist’s volleyball team posted its fifth straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match victory over Canisius today. The Red Foxes won 3-1 (18-25, 25-13, 26-24, 26-24) in order to maintain their top position in the conference. The team now boasts a 12-4 record in the conference, 18-8 overall.
The Red Foxes posted 66 digs for the day, with junior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) tallying 17. Junior Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.), senior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) and freshman Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) each had 11 digs. Brady also had a match-high 50 assists. Sophomore Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) led Marist with 21 kills and 22 points. The Red Foxes averaged a .267 attack percentage, while also claiming 9.5 team blocks.
The match started with four tie scores before Canisius went on a six-point run to obtain an 11-5 lead. Halfway through the first set, the Golden Griffins dominated with a nine-point lead. The Red Foxes responded with a 7-1 run to bring the set within three. This was the closest Marist would get before Canisius claimed the set on a service ace.
Canisius led the second set 9-5 before the Red Foxes posted a 5-0 run to obtain the lead. Canisius responded with a tying point before the Red Foxes tallied a point off a kill from Lahey in order to possess and maintain the lead for the rest of the set. Marist finished strong, going on a seven-point run to claim the set.
To start the third set, Canisius gained an early lead that they would maintain for majority of the set. Halfway through, Canisius posted a six-point lead (15-9), the most the Golden Griffins would be able to post against Marist in the set. Marist continued to trail the Golden Griffins, until the Red Foxes came back to tie the match at 19-all. The end of the set would see four tie scores and three lead changes before Marist put it away on a Canisius attack error.
The fourth set saw five tie scores before Marist went on a 4-0 run to put them up 12-8. The Red Foxes maintained the lead throughout majority of the set until the Golden Griffins posted a five-point run. Canisius brought it back at the end of the set to tie the Red Foxes at 24-all. Marist regained the lead and capitalized on kills by junior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) and Shaw to claim the match victory.
Marist moves on to host its final two matches of the season next weekend against MAAC opponents Saint Peter’s and Rider. Saturday’s match is set to kick off at 4 p.m. at the McCann Arena, and will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
