POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist’s volleyball team swept Niagara 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-21) today at the McCann Arena. The team boasts an 11-4 conference record, maintaining its top position in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes posted a .307 hitting percentage, with senior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) claiming a .714 hitting percentage and sophomore Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Co.) averaging a .538 percentage. Marist also tallied 40 assists, nine service aces and 52 digs throughout the match.
Also for the Red Foxes, junior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) led the team with 12 points, while also claiming 10 kills. Junior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) posted 14 digs to aid Marist to victory.
The match would only see seven tied scores and two lead changes, only in the first set, as Marist dominated its final two sets maintaining the lead entirely for majority of the match.
In the first set, Marist posted a .361 attack percentage, with sophomore Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) posting five kills. After Niagara posted the set’s seventh tying point, the Red Foxes went on a 4-0 run to gain the lead they would maintain for the remainder of the set and the match. Halfway through the set, Niagara would come within two before Marist tallied five points in a row to post a 16-9 score. The Purple Eagles were only able to bring it within 10 points on five separate occasions before Marist capitalized on an attack error to claim the set 25-15.
The Red Foxes continued their momentum with a 6-0 run to start the second set, maintaining the lead through its entirety. Halfway through, Niagara brought the set within five before Marist went on a 5-2 run to put them ahead 17-9. The Red Foxes sealed the match with a two-point run with kills from senior Grace Hill (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Shaw. Junior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) and freshman Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) contributed two service aces each.
Up by two sets, Marist posted a 6-1 run to start. For the first half of the set, the Red Foxes would dominate, only allowing the Purple Eagles to come as close as four points down. At the end of the set, the closest Niagara would come to sparking a comeback was with an 8-0 run, giving Marist an 18-16 lead. The Red Foxes finished out the match on a kill by freshman Liz Gassman (Glenside, Pa.) to finish the set 25-21.
Marist moves on to host Canisius tomorrow at 12 p.m. at the McCann Arena.
