Iona Edges Marist Volleyball, 3-1
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Marist volleyball team fell to fellow Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school, Iona, on Saturday afternoon. The Gaels defeated the Red Foxes in a well-fought match 3-1 (19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 23-25). Marist is now 7-4 in MAAC play.
Sophomore Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Co.) led Marist in kills with 11, followed closely by sophomore Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio), who had 10. Shaw also had one assist and five block assists, and Lahey had one block assist. Senior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) contributed 37 assists for the Red Foxes, as well as three block assists and four kills. Junior Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) totaled seven kills, one assist, and six block assists, and junior Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) had eight kills, one assist and one block assist. Junior Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) had eight kills and four block assists, and both Junior Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) and Freshman Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) each had two assists.
The first set started off as a close game. Kills from Iona were answered by Marist’s Lahey and Stephens. Iona was able to pull away a bit, and the score shifted in its favor, 10-6. A service ace from Jones, as well as a kill from Shaw brought the score to 15-10, but the Red Foxes were unable to overtake the Gaels. Gilbert and Jones contributed kills for Marist, but Iona's Shannon Ward and Alicja Pawelec answered them with their own to keep the lead. The set ended in favor of Iona, 25-19.
Marist took an early lead in the second set, immediately going on a 7-2 run. Iona was able to shrink the Red Foxes' lead to three, the score 9-6, but two kills from Shaw, helped Marist stay ahead. Their lead slowly became smaller as the set went on, and with the score tied at 22-22, Iona was able to take its first lead of the set. A kill from Stephens brought the score to a tie again, but Iona was able to win the last two points, winning the set 25-23.
During the beginning of the third set, Marist came out strong. Four kills from Shaw and one from Gilbert brought the score to 8-5. The Red Foxes were able to keep that lead and capitalize on it. Lahey, Brady and Gilbert all had kills that helped Marist go on a 13-3 run. The Gaels answered with points of their own, and were able to trim Marist’ lead down to one point, the score 23-22. Crucial kills by Shaw and Stephens secure the win for Marist, and they took the third set, 25-23.
The fourth set consisted of many back and forth points. Kills from Stephens, Jones, Brady and a service ace from Jones had the score tied 9-9. Marist took the lead after a kill from Lahey, but Iona's Pawlec and Ward had kills of their own and the score was again tied 14-14. Iona capitalized on the tie game and took the lead, but two kills from Jones put Marist back in front, 18-17. This close game continued, and the teams were tied 20-20. Kills from Pawelec secured the lead for Iona, and Marist was unable to come back, losing the set 25-23.
The Marist volleyball team continues its weekend road trip tomorrow they take on Manhattan College in at the Collge of Mount Saint Vincent's in Riverdale, N.Y. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m
