Marist Football Posts Second Straight Home Shutout

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Marist football team posted its second straight home shutout with a 27-0 victory over Pioneer Football League foe Stetson at Tenney Stadium on Saturday.

Senior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) accounted for four touchdowns and 381 yards of offense, including a career-high 127 rushing yards on just five carries. Looney became the first quarterback in program history to throw 20 touchdown passes in a season. In the process, Looney eclipsed the program's previous single-season record of 18, which he had set last year.

The Marist defense held the Hatters to 131 yards of total offense and eight first downs. The Red Foxes forced 10 punts, and recorded 14 tackles for loss and five sacks.

Fifth-year senior defensive end Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.) had four tackles for loss, including two-and-a-half sacks. Senior linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.) had a team-high seven tackles, including a sack. Senior linebacker Mike Kagafas (Akron, Ohio) added six tackles, including two for loss, and a pass break-up.

Marist got on the scoreboard first with 9:07 left in the first quarter on a touchdown pass from Looney to fifth-year senior tight end Albert Wright (Bridgeport, Conn.). Wright’s first career touchdown, followed by the extra point from freshman kicker Mike Maccarone (Gibbstown, N.J.), gave Marist a 7-0 lead.

With 5:44 left in the second quarter, Looney scored on the longest touchdown run of his a career, a 59-yard effort which enabled the Red Foxes to take a 13-0 halftime lead. Marist then expanded the lead to 20-0 on its first drive of the third quarter, an 11-play, 75-yard march which culminated in a touchdown pass from Looney to Atiq Lucas (Coram, N.Y.). The Red Foxes closed out the scoring just 2:47 later on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Looney to fifth-year senior wide receiver Bartley Leneghan (North Royalton, Ohio).

Looney finished 18-for-30 through the air for 254 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He exited the game after the final play of the third quarter. Senior wide receiver Armani Martin had game highs in receptions (five) and yards (95).

For Stetson, Zach Dyer and Donald Payne each had 10 tackles, and both had one tackle for loss. Quarterback Ryan Tentler, who played the first three quarters, was 9-for-20 for 105 yards through the air, and added a team-high 21 yards on the ground.

This is the 26th shutout in Marist's 36 seasons as a varsity program, and the first time the Red Foxes recorded two shutouts in a season since 2002.

Marist is now 5-3 overall and 4-1 in PFL play; Stetson fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the PFL.

The Red Foxes host PFL for Jacksonville next Saturday at 1 p.m. The Dolphins (4-4 overall, 3-2 PFL) have scored 108 points in their last two games, and are coming off a 56-13 home win over Davidson on Saturday.

Notes: Leneghan has now scored in four straight games, and five of his last six. … Looney now has 49 touchdown passes in his career. … Fede has now totaled 26.5 career sacks, which ranks him second on Marist’s all-time list. The leader is Reid Ellis (28.5), who played at Marist from 1995-98. … The Marist defense now has 27 sacks this season, its highest single-season total since 2002, when it had 35.
