POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist men’s tennis team swept the University of Connecticut in singles on Tuesday afternoon with all six Red Foxes defeating their opponent. Marist also defeated the Huskies in two of three doubles matches.
“It’s always exciting to play a team from the American Athletic Conference,” said head coach Tim Smith. “I was very pleased with the way we finished, realizing that we were down and three of our seniors really stepped up for the victory.”
All six singles matches were won by Marist. In first singles, Senior Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) defeated Wayne Harrell 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. In second singles, senior Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) defeated Jacob Spreyer 7-5, 6-4. In third singles, junior Joseph Dube defeated Chris Tuner 6-1, 6-4. In fourth singles, senior Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) defeated Ryan Carr 6-1, 6-1. In fifth singles, sophomore Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) defeated Parker Goldstein 6-4, 6-3. In sixth singles, freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) defeated Zac McEntee 6-2, 6-1.
The Red Foxes proved successful in doubles matches as well, defeating the Huskies in two of three matches. In first doubles, Rossi and Reznek defeated Harell and Carr, 8-4. In third doubles, Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) and Fletcher defeated McEntee and Josh Cohen 8-0. In second doubles, Klassen and Trym Nagelstad (Oslo, Norway) were narrowly edged by Spreyer and Tuner, 7-8, 10-8.
The Marist men’s tennis team completes its fall season this weekend with the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals in New Haven, Conn.
