LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Marist volleyball team was victorious today in a 3-1 set match (25-10, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23) over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) competitor Rider University. This is the Red Foxes fifth conference win this season, bringing their MAAC record to 5-2.
Senior Grace Hill (Kalamazoo, Mich.) led the Red Foxes in kills during the match, totaling 14. Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) and Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) both had 11 kills each. Stephens contributed three blocks as well. Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Co.) had 10 kills and two blocks, and Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) had 12 digs, nine kills, three blocks, and 46 assists. Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) led the Red Foxes in service aces with three, while Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) contributed two to go along with a match-high 28 digs, and Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) and Gena Russo (Rensselaer, N.Y.) each had one.
The first set was tight until Marist went on a 4-0 run to increase their lead to five with the score 12-7. Rider was able to get a point, but a kill by Stephens set the Red Foxes on an 8-0 run, bringing the score to 20-8. Two service aces by Millington aided this run, as well as kills by Brady and Lahey. Marist continued to dominate the set, and two kills from Stephens and a service ace by Zywick secured the win of the first set, 25-10.
Rider fought back during the second set, and it started out with many back and forth points. Two kills from Brady, three kills from Hill and a kill by Shaw had Marist up 7-6. A kill from Lahey helped increase the lead to 9-6, but Rider came right back with a kill from Bridget Sheerin. The Red Foxes were able to go on a 6-0 run in the middle of the set, and kills from Lahey and Stephens brought the score to 18-11. The closest Rider was able to rally was within five points. Four more kills from Hill, as well as one kill each from Shaw and Marissa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) ended the set 25-17 in favor of the Red Foxes.
During the third set, Rider was able to take its first substantial lead of the match. Three consecutive kills from Rider’s Ryan Ackermann brought the score to 9-5 in favor of the Broncs. The Red Foxes had two kills from Lahey, a kill from Shaw and a kill from Hill that brought them within one point, 12-11, but they were unable to take the lead. Rider went on a 4-0 run, and Marist did not catch up for the rest of the set. Shaw, Hill, Lahey and Brady each had another kill, but the set ended with the Broncs winning 25-18.
The Red Foxes were aggressive in the fourth set, and jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. Rider battled back to within three, the score 9-6. Kills from Shaw and Hill boosted that lead to 12-6 after Marist went on a 3-0 run. The Broncs were able to get within two later in the set, the score 14-12, but the Red Foxes pulled away with two kills from Gilbert and one from Hill, making the score 16-23. Rider rallied back though, and got the set within one point, the score 23-22. A kill from Shaw brought Marist to 24, and although Rider’s Nicole Moorman answered with a kill of her own, Lahey had the kill to end the set with a win for the Red Foxes, 25-23.
The Marist Red Foxes continue their weekend road trip tomorrow when they take on Saint Peter’s in Jersey City, N.J. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
