POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Head coach Jeff Bower has named his captains for the upcoming 2013-14 season. The trio of seniors Jay Bowie (Tampa, Fla.) and Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) and junior Chavaughn Lewis (Queens, N.Y.) will lead the Red Foxes this year.
“I am pleased that Adam, Jay and Chavaughn have embraced the challenge of this role,” Bower said. “They have shown the leadership capabilities throughout the spring, summer and fall and will be integral pieces in establishing the culture and environment that we need for our program to be successful.”
Bowie started in 17 of the 18 games he appeared in last season, missing significant time due to injury. He led the Red Foxes in the three-point percentage, shooting at a .458 (27-59) clip, and was second with a .527 (59-112) field goal percentage. He scored in double figures in points on 10 separate occasions and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in Marists historic win over Vanderbilt on Nov. 23. Off the court, Bowie is a two-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team.
Kemp was an All-MAAC Third Team member a season ago, averaging 10.4 PPG, good for second on the team, and a team-high 8.6 RPG, which also placed him third in the MAAC. He also led the Red Foxes, and was second in the MAAC, with 68 blocks on the season, averaging 2.2 per game. His .555 season field goal percentage was tops for both Marist and the entire conference. He had a career game at Iona on Feb. 7, scoring 29 points while grabbing 16 rebounds and blocking seven shots. For that effort, Kemp was named the MAAC Player of the Week as well as the ECAC and College Sports Madness Player of the Week.
Lewis returns as the Red Foxes leading scorer, averaging 16.7 PPG last season to earn himself a spot on the All-MAAC Third Team. He also led Marist, and the entire MAAC, with an average of 2.0 steals per game and was also second on the team with 5.7 RPG. Lewis scored at least 20 points in a game 12 different times and set a career high with a 30-point effort on Feb. 23 against VMI while also collecting a personal best 16 rebounds. On Feb. 7 at Iona, Lewis nailed a three-quarter court buzzer beater to send the game into double-overtime and earn a spot as the No. 3 play on ESPN’s Top 10.
The Red Foxes held their first official practice of the 2013-14 season on Friday as they begin to prepare for their season-opener on Friday, Nov. 8 at Stony Brook. Marist’s first home game at McCann Arena will be Sunday, Nov. 10 against Elon.
