POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play begins this weekend for the Marist volleyball team as the Red Foxes host Manhattan and Iona at McCann Arena. The match versus the Jaspers will be on Saturday while the Gaels will make the trip on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and will feature live stats and will be streamed online on The Red Fox Network.

Last Time Out…

Marist concluded its non-conference schedule last Saturday, splitting a pair of matches at the Crosstown Tournament. The Red Foxes cruised to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-16) victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) before falling to host Lehigh in a tough five-set decision 3-2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 25-27, 15-11).

Against St. Francis (N.Y.), Grace Hill (Kalamazoo, Mich.) hit a match-high 15 kills to just three attacking errors for a .387 hitting percentage. Mackenzie Stephens (Holland, Mich.) was perfect with nine kills and zero errors for a .600 hitting percentage and Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) also did not commit an error with five kills, hitting at a .556 clip. Becca Jones (Arlington, Va.) finished with seven kills and just one error for a .429 hitting percentage. Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) played the first two sets and finished with 24 assists while Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas) had 16 assists in the third set. Brooke Zywick (Garden City, Mich.) led the defense with a match-high 15 digs.

Versus Lehigh, Stephens had a match-high 15 kills and three blocks. Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) finished with 12 kills and Jones had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Brady also had a double-double with 48 assists and tied her career-high with 17 digs. Zywick led all players in the match with 21 digs while freshman Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had a career-high 11 digs.

Marist in the MAAC…

Marist ranks near the top in the MAAC in most team statistics. The Red Foxes are second hitting percentage (.238), opponent hitting percentage (.173), assists per set (12.36), kills per set (12.97) and service aces per set (1.67).

Individually, several Red Foxes are also atop multiple statistical categories. Four players are in the top 10 in hitting percentage led by Stephens who is third in the conference at .314. Marisa Gilbert (Pflugerville, Texas) is sixth at .240, Courtney Shaw (Centennial, Colo.) is seventh at .238 and Hill rounds out the top 10 at .218.

Marist also has two of just three players in the MAAC who average three kills per set. Stephens leads the conference with a 3.09 kills per set average while Hill is third at 3.00.

Additionally, Millington leads the MAAC with a .58 aces per set average, which also puts her in a tie for eighth nationally. Zywick is tops in the conference with 5.06 digs per set, ranking 36th overall in the country. Brady leads all setters in the MAAC as she is the only one averaging more than 10 assists per set, coming in at 10.78. That average is also good for 42nd in all of Division I.

Scouting Manhattan…

The Jaspers enter Saturday after finishing non-conference play with a 6-6 record. Manhattan broke a three-match losing streak with a 3-0 victory over Howard on Thursday. Three players lead the Jaspers offensively as Ellie Wiekamp (126), Malia McGuinness (118) and Sydney Volovski (113) all have over 100 kills. Teodora Peric is Manhattan’s primary setter, averaging 7.30 assists per set. Allie Yamashiro has twice been named the MAAC Libero of the Week and averages 4.93 digs per set, which is good for second in the conference, behind only Zywick.

Last season, the Jaspers finished fifth in the MAAC with a 10-8 conference record. Marist and the Manhattan split their two matches in 2012, with each team winning on their home court. The Jaspers won the first matchup 3-1 while the Red Foxes won a tough five-set match, 3-2, at McCann Arena.

Scouting Iona…

The Gaels come into the weekend with a 1-8 record after a tough non-conference schedule. Iona is led offensively by Catrina Warren who averages 3.03 kills per set. Natalie Ziskin does the setting for the Gaels, averaging 9.07 assists per set. Katie Marabella leads the defense with 92 digs on the season.

In 2012, Iona finished seventh in the MAAC with a 7-10 record in conference play. The Red Foxes swept the Gaels in their two matches last season, winning 3-2 on the road and in straight sets, 3-0, in Poughkeepsie.
