VESTAL, N.Y. – The Marist women’s soccer team tied Binghamton on Sunday afternoon, 1-1. Samantha Panzner (Livingston, N.J.) posted the goal for the Red Foxes early in the second half. Marist moves to 2-3-2 for the season.
The first half was strong both offensively and defensively for the Red Foxes. Marist posted seven shots, including five on goal, from Alycia Cartica (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), Maria Moreno (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Rycke Guiney (Naperville, Ill.) and Amanda Epstein (Jericho, N.Y.). Goalkeeper Andrea Wicks (East Northport, N.Y.) recorded seven saves for the Red Foxes to keep the scored tied at zero heading into halftime.
Marist came out of the locker room for the second half determined and wasted no time getting on the board. Panzner netted her third goal of the season less than one minute into the second period. She took advantage of a loose ball 15 yards out and ripped a shot to the lower left corner, giving the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats responded in the 74th minute with a goal to tie the game, 1-1. Binghamton’s Rebecca Raber chipped the ball into the box and Sophie Sylla put a head on it past Wicks.
The last 16 minutes remained scoreless heading into overtime. Although each team posted shots in overtime (Marist 3, Binghamton 5), it was to no avail and the game would end in a 1-1 draw.
Marist hits the road for one more away game on Wednesday Sept. 18 to face Seton Hall. The Red Foxes return home for a two game slate, beginning on Saturday Sept. 21 against Manhattan at 4 p.m. and Wednesday Sept. 25 against Niagara at 1 p.m. Both games begin Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play for the Red Foxes. Admission for both games is free and open to the public.
