PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Six Red Foxes won singles’ matches and four doubles’ pairing also won as the Marist men’s tennis team kicked off the 2013-14 season at the first day of the Brown Invitational on Friday.

Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) defeated his opponent from Big East-foe UConn, 7-6 (6), 6-4 in the top, Yellow Flight. Fellow senior, and 2013 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Year Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) won 6-1, 6-2 in the Orange Flight. In the Blue Draw, Joseph Dube (Livonia, Mich.) beat his adversary in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. 2013 MAAC Rookie of the Year Fredrik Bjerke (Oslo, Norway) defeated his Brown opponent 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Dylan Fletcher (Stow, Mass.) won his first collegiate match, 6-1, 6-3 over his opponent from Bryant. Joe Motta (Staten Island, N.Y.) completed the day for Marist, sweeping his opponent without dropping a point, 6-0, 6-0.

Julien Hochner (Nice, France) and Jacob Solly (Sydney, Australia) both fell in tough, three-set matches, advancing to the back draws of their respective flights.

Three players – Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada), Trym Naglestad (Oslo, Norway) and Matteo Giudici (Parma, Italy) – were not able to finish their matches due to time restraints and will finish Saturday morning.

In doubles, the pairings of Bjerke and Rossi, Giudici and Fletcher, Dube and Motta and Solly and Reznek were all victorious, advancing in their respective flights.

"I thought we had an impressive showing today,” Marist assistant coach Jason Sacher said. “As a team we fought hard and displayed a lot of grit and tenacity in all of our matches"

Play at the Brown Invitational will continue on Saturday.
