Marist Football Holds Final Scrimmage Of Camp
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist football team held its final scrimmage of preseason camp Thursday morning at Tenney Stadium. The Red Foxes competed for two segments, which lasted a total of just under 30 minutes of game time.
There were three touchdowns scored in the contest – one offensive, one defensive and one on special teams. The defense recorded four sacks and four turnovers. Senior kicker Jesse Signa (South Huntington, N.Y.) kicked three field goals.
Fifth-year senior defensive end Chris Katerianakis (Baltimore, Md.) recovered a fumble off an errant snap on the first play from scrimmage. After sophomore Garrett Clay (Cumberland, Md.) gained 15 yards on two running plays, Signa booted a 26-yard field goal for the first points of the day.
The defense would record two more turnovers in the first seven minutes on an interception by junior free safety James Holodnak (North Royalton, Ohio) and a fumble recovery by senior nose tackle Kevin Stark (Clifton, N.J.). Stark’s fumble recovery led to a 37-yard field goal by Signa.
Later in the first segment, sophomore quarterback Ed Achziger (Dublin, Calif.) engineered a touchdown drive. Achziger found fifth-year senior tight end Albert Wright (Bridgeport, Conn.) for a 27-yard completion, and then connected with sophomore wide receiver Dylan Clay (Cumberland, Md.) for a 14-yard gain. Achziger capped the drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Timothy Wine (Northport, N.Y.).
On the ensuing drive, senior quarterback Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) moved his team down the field with first-down completions to wide receivers Matt Tralli (Croton, N.Y.) and Joe Tralli (Croton, N.Y.). Freshman running back Leon Cummings (Gainesville, Fla.) added a 12-yard run for another first down. However, on a third-down play, Looney had a pass intercepted by junior safety Alex Spiess (Barrington, R.I.), who returned it 80 yard for a touchdown. Spiess returned an interception for a touchdown in both of the Red Foxes’ scrimmages this summer.
In the second segment, freshman running back Marcellus Calhoun (Columbus, Ohio) ran for three first downs on a drive which saw him gain 41 yards on five carries. The drive also included a 12-yard completion from freshman quarterback Anthony Francis (Providence, R.I.) to Wine, and culminated in a 32-yard field goal by Signa.
The final score of the scrimmage came when freshman wide receiver Joe Jordan (Wanaque, N.J.) blocked a punt and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown.
Freshman linebacker Jimmy Braun (Hopatcong, N.J.), junior safety Matthew Semelsberger (Ijamsville, Md.), sophomore linebacker Nick Pititto (Merrick, N.Y.) and Katerianakis each had one sack apiece. Sophomore safety Michael Marston (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) added a pass break-up.
In addition to going 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts and converting his only extra-point attempt, Signa averaged 41.7 yards on his three punts.
