POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist football team held its first scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday morning at Tenney Stadium.
The contest lasted just over 30 minutes of game time. The defense turned in a solid performance overall, while several players had strong individual efforts on both sides of the ball.
“I was pleased with the defensive intensity,” Head Coach Jim Parady said. “Offensively, we need to eliminate getting off track with penalties, although some guys had good performances individually. We also got some good special teams work in.”
Approximately seven minutes into the contest, red-shirt senior safety Tyler Ramsey (Southbridge, Mass.) made the first big play with a 28-yard interception return. Sacks by junior nose tackle Nicholas Foster (Marlton, N.J.) and junior linebacker Michael Paen (Plantation, Fla.) ended drives in the first 15 minutes.
Senior quarterback Duell Smith (Hilton, N.Y.) guided the only offensive scoring drive of the scrimmage. Smith found freshman wide receiver Joe Jordan (Wanaque, N.J.) for a pair of first downs, and the Red Foxes moved closer thanks to a couple of strong runs by junior Jared Lynch (East Brunswick, N.J.). The drive culminated in a four-yard touchdown run by sophomore Garrett Clay (Cumberland, Md.).
In the final minutes of the scrimmage, junior safety Alex Spiess (Barrington, R.I.) batted a pass to himself and returned it for a 31-yard touchdown. Spiess also recorded a sack in a prior series.
Senior kicker Jesse Signa (South Huntington, N.Y.) had an extra-point conversion, and booted the opening kickoff through the end zone for a touchback.
Marist will return to practice on Sunday with a double session, and will alternate single and double sessions through Wednesday. The team will hold its second and final scrimmage of camp Thursday morning at Tenney Stadium at approximately 9:15.
Marist will open the 2013 season at home against Sacred Heart on Saturday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. A postgame fireworks show will follow the contest. Single-game tickets are available for purchase here.
