POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Athletics Department has released the non-conference portion of the 2013-14 women’s basketball schedule. The Red Foxes will play a total of 10 games against non-conference opponents, with three home dates that include power-conference programs Kentucky and Oklahoma. Overall, seven of the Red Foxes’ opponents played in the postseason in 2012-13 with four reaching the NCAA Tournament.
“We are really excited about our non-conference schedule, highlighted by two Top-20 programs visiting McCann Arena,” Marist head coach Brian Giorgis said. “We feel that we have put together a schedule that will be quite demanding and will help to prepare us to defend our MAAC Title.”
For the third straight season, Marist will open its season at home in McCann Arena. The Red Foxes will start the 2013-14 campaign on Friday, Nov. 8 when SEC-powerhouse Kentucky visits Poughkeepsie. The Wildcats finished #8 in the final USA Today Coaches’ Poll following the 2012-13 season. Marist visited Lexington last December, falling 78-56 to the then-ranked #7/6 Wildcats despite trailing by just eight points in the final seven minutes.
The Red Foxes will hit the road for the first time on Thursday, Nov. 14, traveling up I-87 to take on the University of Albany. Last season, the Great Danes finished at 27-4 and ranked ninth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Poll. They won the America East Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament as a #15-seed. Marist is 2-0 all-time against Albany with the last matchup coming in the 2008-09 season opener, won by Marist, 74-56.
The team will stay on the road on Sunday, Nov. 17, playing at Princeton. The Tigers have become one of the premier mid-major teams in the country, finishing last season ranked fifth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll and earning a #9 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Marist defeated Princeton 56-45 at McCann Arena last season.
The Red Foxes’ next four games will be a part of the inaugural Hall of Fame Challenge, hosted by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Marist will play three games on the campus of Ohio State on the weekend of Nov. 22-24.
The Red Foxes will play their first game against Bowling Green, the winner of two WNIT games last season, on Friday, Nov. 22. In their only previous matchup, Marist defeated the Falcons 70-65 in the 2009 Preseason WNIT. On Saturday, Marist will take on the host Buckeyes. The two teams have split their two previous matchups, with the Red Foxes win coming the in the first round of their 2007 NCAA Tournament run to the Sweet 16. The trip to the Buckeye state will end with another neutral matchup with Old Dominion on Sunday, Nov. 24. The Red Foxes and the Monarchs, who will be competing in Conference USA this season, have never met.
Marist will then conclude the tournament at the MassMutual Center, in Springfield, Mass., with a game against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Dec. 1. The Red Foxes are 3-4 all-time versus St. Bonaventure with the last meeting coming back during the 2011-12 season. The two teams met in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. where the fifth-seeded Bonnies defeated the 12th-seeded Red Foxes 66-63.
Following a break for final exams, the Red Foxes will head to Boston University to take on the Terriers on Saturday, Dec. 14. Boston advanced to the WNIT last season and defeated Sacred Heart in the first round. The Terriers handed the Red Foxes their only home loss of the season, winning an overtime battle by a 62-56 score last December.
Marist returns home for the final two games of the non-conference portion of its schedule. Northeastern, out of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), will come to McCann Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 18. The Red Foxes and Huskies are 2-2 all-time versus each other with the last matchup coming back in December of the 2009-10 season. Marist came out victorious on its home court by a 76-69 score.
Non-conference play wraps up on Saturday, Dec. 21 when the University of Oklahoma travels to the Hudson Valley. The Sooners were ranked #23 in the final USA Today Coaches’ Poll at the end of last season. In last year’s matchup in Norman, the Red Foxes led early in the second half, and trailed by just one with about eight minutes left, before falling 68-55. Back in 2009, Oklahoma visited McCann and the two teams played an overtime thriller with the visitors coming out on top, 80-71. Most recently, coach Giorgis served as an assistant coach for Oklahoma’s head coach Sherri Coale with Team USA during the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
The Red Foxes MAAC schedule will be announced at a later date. Last season, Marist finished with an overall 26-8 record, ranked eighth in the CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Poll, and completed its third perfect 18-0 season in MAAC play. The Red Foxes defeated Iona 72-48 to win their eighth consecutive MAAC Championship, and ninth in the past 10 years.
