POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Several members of the Marist volleyball team have been enjoying successful summers playing for their respective club teams. Many student-athletes spend their summers playing for club teams to help prepare themselves for the fall college season.
Sophomore Kelsey Lahey (Bowling Green, Ohio) finished third at the USA Volleyball (USAV) Junior National Beach Qualifier. With such a high finish, Lahey earned a bid to the 18-Open Junior Beach National Championships. Last season, Lahey appeared in 16 matches for the Red Foxes, recording 64 kills at outside hitter before her season was cut short due to a foot injury.
Amanda Schlegel (Austin, Texas), a setter who will join the Red Foxes as a freshman this fall, also won bronze at the USAV Junior National Championships. Schlegel was also named to the All-Tournament Team, joining current Marist setter, senior Audra Brady (Allentown, Pa.) as the only Red Foxes to be named to the Junior Nationals All-Tournament Team.
Schlegel's future teammate at Marist, Devon Dawson (Frisco, Texas), a left-side hitter, took fifth place at the Junior National Championships.
Rebecca Middleton (Canton, Mich.), a libero who will begin her first season at Marist this fall, won a bronze medal at the AAU 18 Club National Championships.
Additionally, incoming freshman Lexi Millington (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), a left-side hitter, took home bronze at the USAV 18 National Championships.
Marist begins its preseason camp next month before the team will open the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30 at the Toledo Volleyball Invite. The Red Foxes will play its first home matches of the season in the Volley in the Valley Tournament the weekend of Sept. 6-7 when Dartmouth, Hartford and UMass-Lowell all visit McCann Arena.
