POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist Athletics Department and Director of Cross Country Pete Colaizzo have announced the 2013 Marist men’s and women’s cross country schedule. The Red Foxes are coming off a strong 2012 campaign where both squads finished second at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships.
The 2013 season will begin at home with the Marist Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Bowdoin Park. Among the opponents will be MAAC rival Iona. The Gaels have won the past 22 MAAC Championships on the men’s side and the women have won eight in a row. Last season, the Red Foxes swept the Marist Invitational with a 19-point victory on the men’s side while the Marist women won by 35 points. Junior Ken Walshak (Babylon, N.Y.) won for the men in a time of 16:21 while sophomore Michelle Gaye (Greenlawn, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in 19:23, winning by a 17-second margin.
After taking a week off, the Red Foxes will travel to Long Island on Saturday, Sept. 14 to compete in Stony Brook’s Wolfie Invitational. They will race one other time in September, racing in the Iona College Meet of Champions, at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Marist will take part in two events in October, beginning with the Paul Short Run at Lehigh on Saturday, Oct. 5. Two weeks later, the Red Foxes will race at the Princeton Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Van Cortlandt Park will host the Red Foxes three postseason races in November, beginning with the MAAC Championships on Friday, Nov. 1. The NCAA Northeast Regionals (Friday, Nov. 15) and IC4A (men’s) and ECAC (women’s) meets (Saturday, Nov. 23) will also be held at the same site.
