Terrence Fede Selected as Phil Steele’s PFL Defensive Player of the Year
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Marist football team was well represented in Phil Steele’s College Football preview for the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The preview, which is released annually, predicts the top performers at each position for this upcoming college football season.
Leading the Red Foxes is red-shirt senior defensive lineman Terrence Fede (Nyack, N.Y.). Fede was selected as the Preseason Pioneer Football League (PFL) Defensive Player of the Year, as well as being named to the All-PFL team at Defensive Line. Fede landed a Third-Team All-FCS Defensive Line prediction, as well as being ranked 8th among FCS defensive ends, and 63rd amongst the FCS top 100 players.
Last season, Fede was named First-Team All-PFL, and received PFL Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of Nov. 18. In his junior campaign, Fede lead the team in sacks (9) and tackles for loss (12.5). Fede recorded three games with more the one sack, including a three sack performance versus Campbell on Nov. 17, earning his Player of the Week honor.
Senior Chuckie Looney (Ocala, Fla.) ranked 46th among all FCS quarterbacks. Last season, Looney set a single-season program record with 18 touchdown passes, and enters 2013 season tied for the program’s career record with 29 touchdown passes. He completed 150 of 248 passes (60.5 percent) for 2,315 yards, and finished with an efficiency rating of 156.4, good enough to place fifth in FCS ranks. Looney also holds the record for longest pass, and play, in program history with a 97-yard touchdown pass at Valparaiso, on Oct. 27.
Junior tight end David Diomede (Park Ridge, N.J.) ranked 50th amongst FCS players at his positions. Diomede appeared in all 11 games for the Red Foxes last season, catching five passes for 67 yards, and scoring his first career touchdown at Bryant in the season opener, on Sept. 1.
Offensive lineman Phede Celestin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) joined Fede on the Preseason All-PFL First Team. Celesting is coming off a season in which he was named First Team All-PFL for the second straight year. He started the team's first nine games at right tackle until his season was cut short due to injury.
Three Red Foxes were named to Phil Steele’s Preseason Second Team All-PFL list. Offensive lineman Brandon Castelbuono (Wayne, N.J.) started all 11 games at right guard last season and was named Honorable Mention All-PFL. He also earned his third PFL Academic Honor Roll Award last season. Defensive back Nick Kaszei (Brooke Park, Ohio) was also named All-PFL Honorable Mention last season, starting all 11 games at free safety and tying for fourth on the team with 63 total tackles (29 solo). He had a career high in tackles last season with 11 against Bucknell on Sept. 8. Linebacker Paul Sakowski (Chester, N.Y.) completes the trio following his second All-PFL Honorable Mention in 2012. Sakowski started all 11 games at middle linebacker last season, ranking second on the team with 71 tackles (22 solo).
