CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Rising sophomore Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) of the Marist softball team was named ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year and an All-ECAC Second Team Outfielder on Wednesday.
Cheek is coming off an outstanding freshman season, one which saw her earn MAAC Rookie of the Year and All-MAAC First Team honors. She set a single-season program record with 52 runs batted in, and tied the single-season record with 15 home runs. Cheek hit .348, scored 43 runs and had a .663 slugging percentage. Her home run total ranked eighth among Division I freshmen this season, and was 47th overall in the country.
Cheek’s efforts helped the Marist softball reach the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history. The Red Foxes finished the 2013 season with a 30-26 record, and won 30 games for the third consecutive season.
Cheek shared the Rookie of the Year award with Lehigh third baseman Morgan Decker, who won the Patriot League Triple Crown with a .415 average, nine homers and 46 RBIs.
