POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A pair of Marist seniors have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team, as selected by CoSIDA. Kate Conard (East Setauket, N.Y.) of the women’s swimming and diving team earned her second selection and Rebecca Thomas (Cape Town, South Africa) of the water polo team was earned the honor for the first time in her career.
Conard, a Psychology/Special Education major, will graduate as one of the most decorated swimmers in Marist history. She was named MAAC Championship Swimmer of the Year three times, and holds school records in seven individual and four relay events. In MAAC dual meets, Conard won 52 of the 56 events she entered and at the MAAC Championships, she won 11 of 12 individual events she competed in and 15 of 18 relays. A three-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team, Conard holds MAAC Championship individual records in the 500-yd, 1,000-yd and 1,650-yd freestyles. She was a two-year captain for the Red Foxes and, most recently, Conard was named the Marist female Sportsperson of the Year at the senior awards banquet last month.
Thomas, a Communications major, was the Red Foxes’ starting goalkeeper for the past two seasons after transferring from the University of Cape Town. She was twice named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year, sharing the award in 2012 and winning in outright in 2013. In 67 games in her Marist career, Thomas owned a 37-28 record with a .584 save percentage and 7.87 goals against average. This past season, she went 23-12 with 271 saves for a .521 save percentage and 8.10 goals against average. A member of the 2013 MAAC All-Academic Team, Thomas had 29 career games with at least 10 saves.
To be eligible for the award, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 and have at least sophomore standing academically. By virtue of being named First Team Academic All-District, both Conard and Thomas are now eligible for Academic All-American consideration.
