EDISON, N.J. – Marist sophomore outfielder Steve Laurino (Carle Place, N.Y.) and freshman outfielder Matt Pagano (Cranston, R.I.) were both honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) on Monday. Laurino was named Player of the Week and Pagano was named MAAC Rookie of the Week.
Over this past week, Marist went 4-2, with all games being played on the road. The Red Foxes swept Saint Peter’s in a three-game MAAC series over the weekend, which locked up a berth in the conference tournament.
Laurino had 13 hits for the week, as he batted .565 (13-for-23) with a slugging percentage of .739. He had nine runs batted in, four runs scored, four doubles and two sacrifice flies. He keyed Marist's doubleheader sweep at Saint Peter's on May 4 by going a combined 7-for-10 (4-for-6 in game one, 3-for-4 in game two) with six RBIs, two runs scored and three doubles. In the final game of the series on May 5, Laurino was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Marist's 7-6 win.
For this season, Laurino is hitting .394 with 26 runs batted in, a .419 on-base percentage and a slugging percentage of .500. In the Red Foxes’ last 26 games – since March 30 – Laurino is hitting .471 (33-for-70) with 22 RBIs. This is his first career MAAC weekly award.
Pagano hit .524 (11-for-21) with an on-base percentage of .600, slugging percentage of .667 and seven runs scored this past week. He hit safely in each game, and enjoyed four multi-hit games. In Marist's doubleheader sweep at Saint Peter's on May 4, he was 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored in game one, and 3-for-4 with two runs scored in game two. In the series finale at Saint Peter's on May 5, Pagano was 2-for-3 with a run scored, hit by pitch and sacrifice bunt.
Pagano is hitting .347 this season with 36 runs scored, 24 RBIs, a .441 on-base percentage and .479 slugging percentage. This is his second Rookie of the Week award this year, as he was previously honored on Feb. 25.
Marist has earned seven weekly awards this year. In addition to Laurino’s honor and Pagano’s two awards this year, senior right-hander Brett Houseal (Landisville, Pa.) was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week on both March 18 and April 1. Junior right-hander Kevin McCarthy (Malverne, N.Y.) was named MAAC Pitcher of the Week on April 15, and freshman infielder Matt Belitz (Ossining, N.Y.) earned Rookie of the Week honors on March 11.
Marist is 25-19-1 overall and 15-6 in the MAAC. The Red Foxes will have their conference bye next weekend, and will return to action with a two-game set at ACC foe Virginia Tech. The teams will play a single game both Saturday and Sunday, with play on each day scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
