EDISON, N.J. – Freshman Nicole Cheek (Simi Valley, Calif.) was honored by the MAAC in the conference’s weekly award announcement on Monday as the Rookie of the Week. One of the MAAC’s most dangerous batters, she garnered the accolade, the first of her career, for her play versus Holy Cross, Manhattan and Saint Peter’s this past week.

Cheek continued her strong production from the heart of the order for the Red Foxes as she expanded her team lead in RBIs with 44 on the season. This week in doubleheaders at Holy Cross, Manhattan and Saint Peter’s, the freshman drove in a total of nine RBIs, while scoring six runs. Versus the Crusaders on Tuesday and Peacocks on Sunday, she connected for home runs to raise her season total to 12. For the week, she hit .429 (9-21) with six runs, nine RBIs, two doubles and two home runs. She slugged .810 over the six games.

Of note in the single-season record books, Cheek is just three RBIs shy of breaking Amanda Koldjeski’s 2001 program record for most RBIs in a year.

During the 2013 season, the Marist softball team has garnered eight weekly awards as Cheek is joined by Emily Osterhaus, a three-time winner, Janine Lalli, a two-time winner, Melanie White (Pitcher of the Week, 3/18) and Kyrsten Van Natta (Rookie of the Week, 3/5).

Marist (24-22, 10-4 MAAC) will be back in action on Tuesday, April 30 with a single non-conference home game versus Yale; the first pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
